Riverfront Reclamation

Middlegrounds Metropark is a 28-acre urban park located in downtown Toledo, Ohio, along the Maumee River. The park, which opened in 2016, was developed on reclaimed riverfront property that was once an industrial area and railroad yard.

The park features a half-mile of river frontage, beginning at the Anthony Wayne Bridge and extending southwest. A 1.5-mile meandering walk and bike path winds through the park, offering visitors tranquil views of the Maumee River. It's not uncommon to see large freighters passing by on the river.

Sustainable Design

Middlegrounds Metropark was created with sustainability in mind. The transformation of the land began with the removal of 8,000 tons of debris.

The park includes a natural system that captures and cleans water runoff from the adjacent bridge before it enters the Maumee River. Many of the park's features, including the decking, are made from sustainable materials such as ipe wood.

Recreational Features

The park serves as an urban oasis, providing green space and recreational opportunities for downtown residents and visitors. It includes a kayak cove with access to the river for those who bring their own boats.

There's also an off-leash dog area with separate fenced sections for large and small dogs.

Future Development

Middlegrounds Metropark is part of the planned Glass City Riverwalk project, which aims to create 300 acres of greenspace along both sides of the Maumee River in downtown Toledo.
