Riverfront Reclamation

Right next to the Maumee River in downtown Toledo, Middlegrounds Metropark is a 28-acre space along the river in contrast to the surrounding urban environment. Opened in 2016, this green space has quite the backstory - once an industrial zone and railroad yard, it's now a peaceful riverside retreat that locals and visitors alike can enjoy.

The park hugs a half-mile stretch of river, starting at the Anthony Wayne Bridge and continuing southwest. A 1.5-mile meandering walk and bike path winds through the grounds, with views of the Maumee River and Toledo's skyline. If you're lucky, you might even catch sight of massive freighters gliding by on the water - a surprisingly mesmerizing sight!

Sustainable Design

The transformation of Middlegrounds wasn't just about making things pretty. It was a serious environmental undertaking that began with hauling away 8,000 tons of debris - not exactly a weekend cleanup project!

The park now features a clever natural system that captures and cleans water runoff from the adjacent bridge before it reaches the Maumee River. Many elements around the park, including the gorgeous decking, are crafted from sustainable materials like ipe wood.

We find it particularly cool that you can spot pieces of the area's history around the park. Keep an eye out for old sandstone blocks from the former Fassett Street Bridge (which dramatically collapsed in 1957) thoughtfully incorporated into the modern design.

Recreational Features

Middlegrounds provides green space in downtown Toledo. Water enthusiasts will appreciate the kayak cove where you can launch your own boat for a paddle on the Maumee.

Bringing your four-legged friend? The park includes an off-leash dog area with separate fenced sections for both large and small pups. Just note that this area might close during wet weather to keep the grounds from turning into a muddy mess.

Fishing fans can try their luck at numerous spots along the riverfront. The catfish here apparently don't mess around - people regularly report catching ones weighing 3-5 pounds!

Amenities and Facilities

Need a spot for your next gathering? The park features a spacious pavilion donated by the Toledo Rotary as part of their centennial project. You can rent this covered shelter for $100 per day, making it excellent for family picnics or small events.

The pavilion area comes equipped with picnic tables, chairs, and a large charcoal grill for your cookout needs. You'll also find clean, well-maintained restrooms nearby - always a plus for any park visit.

Throughout Middlegrounds, you'll discover various seating areas with benches and tables where you can relax and soak in those river views. There are even designated hammock areas if you're looking to truly unwind and maybe catch a riverside nap.

Future Development

Middlegrounds is just one piece of a bigger vision for Toledo's riverfront. It's part of the planned Glass City Riverwalk project, which aims to create 300 acres of greenspace along both sides of the Maumee River in downtown Toledo.
