About the Location
Features and Amenities
Tucked away in Norman, Northeast Lions Park covers 24 acres of green space. The centerpiece is the 6-acre pond stocked with hybrid sunfish and channel catfish. If you're lucky (or skilled), you might even reel in some bass that locals swear are lurking beneath the surface.
The pond comes complete with a fishing dock and fish feeder, plus those clever spider blocks (fish attractors) scattered throughout to improve your chances of a good catch. There's a peaceful quality to this fishing spot, and you'll often see locals spending the day under the shade trees that line the shoreline with their fishing rods.
Historic Disc Golf Course
History buffs and disc golf enthusiasts, take note: this park houses one of America's oldest disc golf courses, established way back in 1977. The 18-hole course isn't just old - it's a genuinely good challenge with its concrete tee pads and Prodigy T1 targets.
The course beautifully incorporates the park's natural landscape, winding through rolling terrain and narrow fairways bordered by tall rough and trees. Several holes play around the large pond, adding that heart-pounding water hazard element to your game. Fair warning: many players consider this course more on the advanced side due to those narrow fairways and water hazards. On windy days, those shots over water require nerves of steel and precise throwing skills.
Playgrounds and Recreation Areas
Kids aren't forgotten at Northeast Lions Park, with two playground areas that provide plenty of fun. The main playground sits just across a bridge from the entrance and offers the usual suspects: slides and climbing equipment that will keep the little ones entertained for hours. The playgrounds are set in open spaces, making it easy to keep an eye on your adventurous explorers.
If you're looking to get some steps in, the park's jogging and walking trails meander around the grounds. These paths make for a great way to exercise while soaking in nature, and thoughtfully placed benches offer spots to catch your breath or simply sit and appreciate the surroundings.
Picnic and Gathering Spaces
The park has multiple picnic areas equipped with tables and grills - suitable for impromptu cookouts or planned family gatherings. There are two covered pavilions offering lovely pond views, plus numerous open tables scattered within the park.
The picnic tables near the entrance tend to be impeccably maintained, while those deeper in the park (especially the ones closer to the water) might need a quick wipe before setting up your feast. Each picnic area comes with its own grill, so you can cook up something delicious while enjoying the fresh air.
Natural Setting
One of the most surprising things about this park is how quickly you can feel miles away from city life. Thick woods embrace open grassy areas, creating an almost wilderness-like atmosphere right in the middle of Norman.
The diverse ecosystem makes the park a hotspot for birdwatching too. The blend of water, woodland, and open spaces attracts a variety of feathered visitors that will delight any bird enthusiast.
Dog-Friendly Environment
Your four-legged friends are welcome here! The park is dog-friendly with plenty of open space for them to sniff and explore. There's even a dedicated water fountain for dogs, and the chain-link fence around the perimeter offers some peace of mind when letting your pup enjoy the great outdoors.
Facilities Information
The park welcomes visitors year-round, with climate-controlled restroom facilities available from April through October. From November through March, these facilities remain open, weather permitting. The restrooms include practical touches like changing tables and air dryers.
If you're looking for a quieter experience, try visiting on weekdays. Weekends and summer months tend to draw larger crowds, particularly disc golf players and fishing enthusiasts, while weekday visits often reward you with a more tranquil, peaceful experience.
