Reaves Park

History and Location

Before becoming one of Norman's most popular parks, this land served as a Naval Air Station during World War II. It wasn't until the 1960s that it transformed into the public green space it is today - now a generous 78 acres near the University of Oklahoma campus along Jenkins Avenue, making it one of Norman's oldest and largest community green spaces.

Recreational Facilities

With sprawling green spaces shaded by mature trees, Reaves Park provides a natural retreat from the bustle of city life. The park accommodates various interests, whether you're looking to play or just unwind.

Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the park's extensive sports facilities, particularly the baseball and softball fields that host local competitions all year long. These fields have seen some renovations recently, with improved fencing and amenities, however they could use a bit more TLC in certain areas.

If you prefer a more casual outdoor experience, the park's walking trails provide perfect pathways for a morning jog, afternoon stroll, or walking your four-legged friend. The open grassy areas are great for frisbee games, kite flying, or impromptu picnics.

The park's standout feature is an impressive wooden playground structure that resembles a castle fortress, popular with both kids and nostalgic adults. Built by community volunteers, this playground has been delighting Norman families for decades. It's showing some signs of wear, but there's something special about this wooden wonderland that continues to capture imaginations in our age of modern plastic playsets.

Hungry after all that play? The park offers numerous picnic areas scattered within the grounds, with tables and pavilions making it easy to enjoy a meal outdoors. Several shelters come equipped with grills - ideal for family reunions or weekend cookouts with friends. Even on scorching Oklahoma summer days, you can find comfortable shade to relax under.

Landmarks and Events

Taking a moment for reflection, visitors can pay respects at the Cleveland County Veterans Memorial that honors local service members.

Reaves Park really comes alive during its community events. The annual Medieval Fair in April transforms the grounds into a renaissance celebration and ranks among Oklahoma's largest festivals. For three days, the park fills with vendors, performers, and visitors stepping back in time.

The park also hosts spectacular Fourth of July celebrations complete with fireworks, meaningful Juneteenth festivals, and various sporting tournaments throughout the year.

Visitor Experience

With its central location and diverse amenities, Reaves Park is a popular gathering space for Norman residents and visitors seeking both active recreation and peaceful moments in nature.

The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM until midnight. A practical heads-up: while portable toilets are available across the grounds, permanent restroom facilities are limited. You'll come across plenty of parking, which is especially helpful during the park's popular events and sports tournaments.
