About the Location

Historic Origins

Tucked away in the heart of Oklahoma City, Perle Mesta Park offers a charming green escape within the historic Mesta Park neighborhood (formerly known as University Addition).

The city acquired this small retreat in July 1974, using funds from a 1968 General Obligation Bond Issue. By May 1975, the City Council had officially christened it Perle Mesta Park, and a popular community space was born.

The Woman Behind the Name

Ever wonder who Perle Mesta was? She wasn't just any Oklahoman - she was a powerhouse socialite and women's rights advocate from Oklahoma City who made waves in the 20th century. People nicknamed her "the Hostess with the Mostes'" thanks to her legendary Washington, D.C. parties during the Truman presidency.

Her brother, O.W. Skirvin, donated $5,000 to establish the park and "Perle Mesta Plaza" - keeping his sister's legacy alive in her hometown.

Grassroots Beginnings

This park has genuine community roots. Local residents like Charles and Sharon Keeler were among the neighborhood visionaries who transformed empty lots into the green space we enjoy today. Before their efforts, the area had no park at all - can you imagine?

Many surrounding historic homes have their own stories too. Some neighbors even incorporated materials from condemned houses that once stood on what's now parkland - talk about recycling with purpose!

What You'll Find There

Spanning over 2 acres, the park features various amenities. Kids will make a beeline for the playground with its big and small slides and age-appropriate swings (upgraded thanks to a 1995 bond issue).

Fancy a bit of volleyball? The park sports two sand volleyball courts that draw players throughout the warmer months. If you're looking to join in, swing by on Monday evenings from 5pm until sunset during spring and summer - players of all skill levels are welcome.

You'll also find a beautiful gazebo with picnic tables, built in 2001 through a collaboration of city grants, Parks Department funds, and neighborhood association contributions - an ideal spot for a family lunch or catching up with friends.

The Natural Setting

One of the park's simple pleasures is its lush, well-kept grassy areas - ideal for spreading out a blanket, tossing a frisbee, or just watching clouds roll by. Winding walking paths make for pleasant strolls, whether you're walking your dog or just stretching your legs.

The quiet, scenic neighborhood surrounding the park creates a peaceful atmosphere despite being in the middle of a city. Note that you'll need to find street parking, and there aren't any restroom facilities available.

Community Love

The Mesta Park Neighborhood Association and local supporters have poured nearly $150,000 into making this park special over the years. Their dedication shows in the thoughtfully planted trees, vibrant crepe myrtle beds, and the welcoming entrance feature at the southwest corner.

Safety improvements came in 2009, including an enhanced southeast entrance and better lighting - because a park should be a place where everyone feels comfortable.

Gathering Place

The park hosts annual traditions like Mesta Festa and summer ice cream socials, creating a community gathering space in the middle of the city.
