Owen Park
About Owen Park
A Journey Through Time
Established on June 8, 1910, Owen Park is Tulsa's first public park. Spread across roughly 24 acres on the eastern edge of the Owen Park Historic District, this green space is steeped in local history and charm.
The story of this park begins with Chauncey Owen, the original landowner. Back in 1909, the city purchased over 20 acres from Owen and his wife Mary for $13,500 - quite the sum in those days!
Nature's Retreat
At the heart of Owen Park sits a small lake created in 1913 when the city dammed a ravine. If you could time-travel to the 1920s, you'd find locals splashing about and perhaps even braving the twelve-foot diving tower that once stood here.
While swimming is now off the table, the lake remains the park's centerpiece, home to ducks and geese that waddle about, seemingly posing for photos. Recent renovations have given the pond area a facelift, including removing a small island and restocking it with fish for local anglers.
From certain spots in the park, you can catch beautiful glimpses of Tulsa's downtown skyline. Massive mature trees create pools of shade throughout the grounds, and the gently rolling hills offer a serene escape from city life. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think.
Where History Lives
This park has seen some things in its day. In 1910, five acres were sold to the Tulsa Vitrified Brick Company, creating a large pit. After a tragic drowning in 1954, the city bought back the land, filled in the pit, and welcomed it back into the park's embrace.
History buffs will appreciate the monuments marking where the Cherokee, Creek, and Osage Indian nations met - a literal crossroads of Oklahoma heritage. There's also a memorial to Washington Irving, who apparently had nice things to say about the view from the park's hilltop long before it was even a park.
Perhaps most intriguing is Tulsa's oldest standing house, tucked away within the park boundaries. This historical treasure offers a tangible connection to the city's early days.
Play, Splash, Shoot Hoops
Looking for some outdoor fun? The park's playground features the usual suspects - slides, swings, and climbing equipment. It might be better suited for kids around 8-10 years old rather than the tiny tots, but it gets the job done.
During those sweltering Oklahoma summers, the splash pad becomes the park's main attraction, with families flocking to cool off. If basketball is more your speed, the courts await your next pickup game, and the community center hosts everything from fitness classes to indoor pickleball for those rainy days.
The stocked pond makes for some decent fishing, especially if you're just learning the ropes or teaching a youngster. And if simply stretching your legs is on the agenda, the walking trails offer pleasant pathways through the park's natural beauty.
Picnic Perfect
Scattered throughout Owen Park, you can find several picnic areas complete with tables and charcoal grills. The generous canopy of shade trees creates ideal spots to spread out a blanket or enjoy a family meal.
There's a handy covered seating area for when the weather turns, but keep in mind that the restrooms follow business hours and typically close on Sundays. On those days, you'll discover a portable toilet instead - not glamorous, but practical.
Wildlife Encounters
The park hosts a cast of animal residents, including ducks, geese, and notably bold squirrels that might check out your picnic spread. While it's tempting to share your snacks, signs now ask that you refrain from feeding the wildlife - probably for the best.
These natural elements create a peaceful retreat that feels removed from city life, despite being firmly within Tulsa's boundaries.
A Community Treasure
Today, Owen Park continues its century-long tradition as a green space where history and recreation come together. The park regularly hosts community gatherings and family events year-round.
Many locals consider it something of a "hidden space" compared to Tulsa's more crowded parks - a quieter space for reflection and outdoor enjoyment. With its historical significance, natural beauty, and modern amenities, Owen Park remains an interesting corner of Tulsa to explore.
