About the Location
A Piece of Bend's History
Stretching along the Deschutes River, Miller's Landing Park has a story that runs as deep as the water beside it. Established in 2013, this park sits on land once owned by Harry Miller of Miller Lumber Company. Back in the early 1900s, lumber would stack up here, waiting for horse-drawn wagons to cart it away across Bend.
The park might not exist today if not for a passionate community effort in 2010, when The Trust for Public Land rallied locals to raise funds and preserve this touch of riverfront for everyone to enjoy.
What You'll Find
This 4.7-acre riverside haven offers some of the prettiest views of the Deschutes River you'll discover in town. It's a gateway to the Deschutes River Trail, making it perfect if you're looking to wander from the Riverside neighborhood all the way to the Old Mill District.
The park features open lawns excellent for picnics, interconnected walking paths, and several spots where you can dip your toes in the river. Need a place for a family gathering? The picnic shelter with tables provides a shady spot for celebrations or casual get-togethers.
River Recreation
The river is the main attraction here. On any given day, you might catch the colorful parade of kayakers, stand-up paddleboarders, and people floating downstream on inner tubes. The nearby Bend Whitewater Park adds to the entertainment - grab a seat on the bank and watch surfers tackle the rapids.
Summer brings crowds for swimming and sunbathing, and finding your own patch of grass can be challenging during peak season. If you prefer tranquility, visit during fall or winter when the crowds thin out and the river views take on a peaceful quality.
Grow Your Own
Green thumbs unite at the park's community garden, run by the Miller's Landing Community Garden Group. Local residents tend to their plots, growing everything from tomatoes to zinnias in this shared space.
Creature Comforts
You'll appreciate the practical touches: clean, accessible restrooms and a water station to refill your bottle. Parking is plentiful, including accessible spaces near the entrance. Bringing your four-legged friend? The park welcomes leashed dogs, with waste stations available so you can clean up after your pooch.
The expansive grassy areas provide plenty of space to relax with a book, enjoy a snack, or simply watch the clouds drift by. Birders, don't forget your binoculars - the riverfront location attracts a variety of water birds.
Looking Ahead
Miller's Landing is currently getting some thoughtful updates as part of a river access and restoration project. These improvements aim to make the park more accessible for everyone, including those with mobility challenges, by enhancing the boardwalk and river entry points.
The riverbank itself is also getting some TLC with habitat restoration efforts. Mark your calendar for summer 2025, when the project is expected to be complete.
