About the Location
Natural Landscape
Situated in southeast Bend, Oregon, Stone Creek Park spans 6.17 acres of community space just west of Silver Rail Elementary School. The park features interesting basalt lava formations that create a mini butte-like natural area at its heart. Climb to the top for views stretching southeast to China Hat Butte and all the way to the Newberry National Volcanic Monument.
Most of the park remains beautifully wild and untouched, but don't worry about accessibility - a network of well-maintained unpaved trails winds through the basalt formations, inviting you to explore the local geology up close. These paths offer a peaceful walking experience surrounded by Central Oregon's distinctive landscape.
Fun for Everyone
Stone Creek Park blends modern recreation with nature-inspired play areas. Kids (and kids at heart) with bikes can practice their skills on the small bike pump track designed for beginners. There's also a modest skate spot featuring basic elements - a box, flat rail, and ramp. It's not a full-blown skatepark, but rather a purpose-built street spot with a tiny flat ledge, a flat bar, and a sloped up ledge placed in the middle of the BMX track.
What we particularly love about this park are the natural play areas that encourage creative, unstructured play. You can find sand boxes with "log steppers," a water trough, a mini "excavator," and smoothed logs - all designed to connect children with nature while they play. There's some open grassy area too, although it's not extensive.
Practical Information
When nature calls, you can find clean portable restrooms available. For parking, you can use the dedicated lot or find additional public parking along Lorenzo Drive. If you opt for street parking, just be considerate and avoid blocking mailboxes or driveways.
The park also offers picnic areas and a shelter, fantastic for small gatherings or enjoying a meal outdoors while surrounded by Bend's natural beauty.
A Bit of History
Stone Creek Park is relatively new, having been developed in 2017. The land was acquired between 2014 and 2018 from various sources including the Lands Bend Corporation, City of Bend, Kent Neumann, and Bradford Kent.
As you might have guessed, the park takes its name from the neighborhood development where it's located.
