About the Location
Recreational Facilities
Located in south central Bend, Oregon, Ponderosa Park sprawls across 19 acres next to Bear Creek Elementary School. The park's twin skateparks see plenty of activity from sunrise to sunset practically every day of the year. Many local skaters consider these some of the best spots in town, and having two right next to each other is certainly convenient.
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate Hal Puddy Field, a versatile ball field that hosts adult softball games and youth soccer matches throughout spring, summer, and fall. The field offers a 50' pitching distance and multiple base options (60', 65', 70', and 80'), but you won't find an outfield fence here.
If basketball's more your speed, you're in luck - the park has courts waiting for your next game. There's also a spacious court marked for pickleball that's generous enough that some regulars bring their own nets to set up additional games.
Family-Friendly Amenities
Kids have their own special corner of Ponderosa with a playground area featuring slides and play equipment that keeps children of all ages entertained for hours. When winter blankets Bend in snow, the hill beside the ball field transforms into a gentle sledding area that's great for younger children - These gentle slopes work well for little ones taking their first sledding adventures.
The park's expansive lawns invite impromptu frisbee games, picnics, or just lounging with a good book. Several picnic shelters dotted around the grounds offer welcome shade and plenty of seating, even during the busiest summer days. You'll discover clean, well-maintained restrooms that are heated in winter (a thoughtful touch!) and accessible to wheelchair users. And nobody goes thirsty here - water fountains are designed with everyone in mind: adults, kids, and four-legged friends.
For Dog Owners and Walkers
Speaking of four-legged friends, the off-leash dog park area is a highlight for many pet owners. This fenced area includes separate sections for small and large dogs, with benches, shady trees, and water bowls. It's a bit of a secluded place - rarely overcrowded, according to regular visitors.
The park's walking trails, including the Coyner Trail, connect to neighboring areas and bike routes, making it easy to extend your outdoor adventure. Some paths go through desert landscapes and stands of pines, offering a peaceful retreat from city life without leaving town.
Natural Setting
True to its name, Ponderosa Park is home to numerous towering ponderosa pines that cast cool shadows across the grounds. This natural canopy creates welcome relief during Central Oregon's hot summer days while adding to the park's serene atmosphere.
What makes this park special is how it preserves pieces of the natural landscape. Some sections are intentionally kept in their native state, giving visitors a glimpse of the local ecosystem in its untouched form.
Visitor Information
Fall afternoons tend to draw crowds, which can make parking a bit tricky. Consider carpooling or alternative transportation if you're planning a visit during peak times.
The park is generally clean and well-maintained. Open daily from 5AM to 10PM, it accommodates everyone from early birds getting in their morning jog to families enjoying evening picnics as the day cools down.
If you're in Bend for the 4th of July, Ponderosa offers one of the best spots to watch fireworks displays, with plenty of room to spread out a blanket and enjoy the show.
