About the Location

Park Overview

Situated in the Jefferson/Westside neighborhood of Eugene, Monroe Park is a charming 2.58-acre green space that occupies a square block at the intersection of Broadway and Monroe streets. What was once Lincoln Elementary School transformed into this cherished community park in 1961.

Situated perfectly between downtown Eugene and the Whiteaker neighborhood, this compact urban retreat sits right in the middle of a residential area. Street parking is available all around the park's edges.

Features and Amenities

Monroe Park features rolling hills, public art installations, a play area, and picnic spots for outdoor meals. Large trees provide shade on hot days, while open grassy spaces offer a quiet retreat from the surrounding neighborhood.

Kids of all ages will appreciate the playground equipment, including swings with baby/toddler swings for the littlest visitors. The small grassy hill has become a natural playground feature where children love to roll down and play - sometimes the simplest features are the most popular.

For the more actively inclined, the park's basketball court with hoops provides a spot for pickup games, while the large open field is great for impromptu soccer matches or tossing a frisbee around.

You'll discover several picnic tables and benches scattered across the park when you need a place to rest or enjoy a snack. A blacktop footpath circles the entire park with occasional benches along the way, great for a quick walking loop or a leisurely stroll.

Landscape and Environment

The beautiful mature trees both within and surrounding Monroe Park are perhaps its most striking feature, creating pools of shade across the grounds. The well-maintained grassy areas invite you to spread out a blanket, practice some meditation, or simply run around and play.

A buffer of foliage separates the sidewalk from the road, providing some separation from nearby traffic.

History and Development

Over the years, Monroe Park has evolved through several renovations, with significant improvements in 1977, 1984, and most recently in 2005.

Recent safety enhancements include public safety monitoring to help ensure the park maintains its family-friendly atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.

Community Involvement

This park serves the residents living just west of downtown Eugene.

On occasion, Monroe Park comes alive with community events and performances held at its small stage area. Local volunteer groups like the Friends of Monroe Park contribute to its well-kept appearance through regular cleanups and improvement projects.

Throughout the day, you'll see locals walking their dogs, relaxing with friends, or enjoying various outdoor activities in this neighborhood retreat.
