About the Location

A Bit of History

Positioned in Eugene's South University Neighborhood sits Washburne Park, a charming 4.86-acre green space bordered by East 20th Avenue, Agate Street, and East 21st Avenue.

This tranquil spot was once part of the Washburne Estate before becoming a public park in 1961 after Narcissa Washburne passed away, gifting local residents with this leafy retreat.

What You'll Find There

The park slopes gently and is dotted with mature trees that cast welcoming patches of shade across the grounds. One of the more interesting remnants of its estate days is the historic wading pool.

While you can't take a dip anymore, it's a quaint reminder of the park's past life. Along the western edge, you'll notice a distinctive 2-foot to 4-foot tall basalt wall with two staircases that lead up from Agate Street into the park's embrace.

How People Enjoy It

Given its proximity to the University of Oregon campus, Washburne Park has become a favorite spot for both neighborhood residents and college students looking for a peaceful escape. The open grassy areas make perfect picnic spots, casual sports fields, or just places to stretch out with a good book.

The thick canopy of mature trees creates cool, shaded areas that offer sweet relief during those hot summer days - ideal for community gatherings or just hanging out with friends.

Things to Do

The expansive lawns are excellent for all sorts of outdoor activities. If you're into lawn games, the level ground makes for an especially good bocce ball court. There's plenty of room for yoga, frisbee, or just lounging around on a blanket.

You can find several benches scattered around the perimeter if you need a place to sit, although seating is somewhat limited - you might want to bring a blanket if you're planning to stay awhile. The park stays open 24 hours, but keep in mind there are no public restrooms available.

Getting There

As a neighborhood park, Washburne doesn't have its own parking lot. You'll need to find street parking in the surrounding area, which can be a bit tricky during busy times or university events.

For the Dog Lovers

Four-legged friends are welcome here! Many local dog owners bring their pets to enjoy the open space. While there isn't a dedicated fenced dog area, the generous lawns provide plenty of room for your pup to stretch their legs while you keep them company.
