About Gilbert Heights Park
A Local Park
Situated in the Powellhurst-Gilbert area of Portland, Gilbert Heights Park has been serving the community since the city acquired this 3.81-acre green space in 1993. Located next to Gilbert Heights Elementary School, it functions as both an extended playground for students and a gathering spot for families after school hours.
What You'll Find
If you're into sports, the park got a nice upgrade in 2010 with a new ball field that comes complete with dugouts and bleachers. It's suitable for casual games or watching children's sporting activities.
The basketball courts feature covered hoops - practical given Portland's frequent rain. And yes, there's a clean, well-maintained playground where younger kids can climb, slide, and burn off that boundless energy.
ADOregon Coast Tour and Wine Tasting From Portland- Full Day Tour
The Oregon coast is one of the most majestic geologic formations that was formed by lava flows millions of years ago. We depart to the coast and have lunch in the charming town of Cannon Beach and do hiking and exploring on the coast.
Get Moving
One of our favorite features is the paved walkway that loops around the park. It's smooth enough for an easy stroll, and ideal if you've got kids learning to ride bikes or trying out their roller skates without too many obstacles in the way. The open layout means there's plenty of room to spread out, toss a frisbee, or just flop down on a blanket with a good book.
Got a green thumb? The community garden offers plots where you can grow your own veggies and flowers. And when it's time to eat, head over to the picnic area - a lovely spot to unpack your lunch or host a casual get-together.
Bring Your Furry Friends
Dog owners will appreciate that the park has dedicated spaces for your four-legged companions, with areas for both on-leash walks and off-leash play. It's a welcome spot for neighborhood pups to socialize and stretch their legs.
In Case of Emergency
Gilbert Heights serves a crucial role as a Basic Earthquake Emergency Communication Node (BEECN). Should a major earthquake knock out phone service, remember that this park is designated as a place where you can go to request help or report serious damage and injuries. It's not something we like to think about, but it's good to know.
ADColumbia Gorge Scenic Bikeway full day ride
If there is any adventure that we love more than biking in the Columbia River Gorge, we would be hard-pressed to identify it. The cycling here is world-renowned and it's no accident it's one of less than a dozen places in the world to have a Peloton-guided scenic ride created around it.
Getting There
You can access the park from SE 130th Avenue and Boise Street, making it easily reachable for folks in the surrounding area. Note that dedicated parking is limited, so if you live nearby, consider walking or biking over instead.
The Practical Stuff
Public restrooms are available and generally kept in good condition - always a plus when you're spending a few hours outdoors. There are also shelter areas that provide welcome cover during those inevitable Portland rain showers, meaning your park plans don't have to be completely weather-dependent.
