About the Location
The OG of Oregon Disc Golf
Located in Gresham, a stone's throw from Portland, Rockwood Central Park spans 9.4 acres. Established in 1980, this park holds a pretty cool claim to fame - it's Oregon's first disc golf course. That's right, disc golf pioneers, this is where it all began in the Beaver State.
Natural Setting
The park offers a nice mix of open sunny meadows and the shade of towering fir trees. While mostly flat (no need to break a sweat on steep hills here), the landscape offers just enough variation to keep things interesting. Most of the disc golf action happens under the canopy of those magnificent firs in the northeast section, creating a peaceful woodland vibe for your game.
Disc Golf Paradise
The 9-hole disc golf course is the star attraction here. It's on the shorter side, making it perfect if you're just getting your feet wet in the sport or if you're looking to squeeze in a quick round between errands. Don't let the size fool you though - the strategic placement of trees adds some challenge for players of all levels.
Local disc golf enthusiasts have been flinging frisbees here for decades, with some dedicated players even organizing night glow disc golf sessions. If it's your first visit, you might want to download the UDisc app to help navigate the course, as signage is pretty minimal.
Beyond the Discs
Not into disc golf? No problem. The park caters to pretty much everyone with two distinct playground areas in the southeast corner - one for the little tots and another for older kids ready for more adventure.
Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the full-court basketball area, a baseball/softball field, and plenty of open space excellent for impromptu soccer matches, volleyball games, or just tossing a ball around. Several uncovered picnic tables dot the landscape, with a couple at the northeast corner and two more at the south end - fantastic for a casual lunch or afternoon snack.
Practical Stuff
You'll come across two public restroom facilities on the south side - newer metal structures that have been recently installed. Just be aware that cleanliness can be hit or miss depending on when you visit.
Dog lovers, you're welcome to bring your furry friends, but do keep them leashed. You'll find waste bags along the main path, so there's no excuse for not cleaning up after your pooch.
When to Visit
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 10PM, giving you plenty of time to enjoy all it has to offer. Weekends tend to draw the crowds, especially among the disc golf community.
The wooden bleachers near the sports fields offer a nice spot to rest, whether you're cheering on a game or just enjoying the atmosphere of this historic little park.
