About the Location

A Volcano in the City

Positioned in Southeast Portland, Mount Tabor Park spans 196 acres atop an extinct volcanic cinder cone. Yes, you read that right - a volcano right in Portland's backyard! It's one of several volcanic buttes in the Boring Lava Field (despite the name, there's nothing boring about it). Standing at 636 feet, From the top, you'll enjoy excellent panoramic views of Portland's skyline, and on clear days, you can spot both Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens in the distance.

If you're into geology, you'll appreciate the exposed cinder layers near the summit that reveal the park's volcanic heritage. There's even a basketball court and amphitheater built right in what was once the volcano's caldera - how many courts can claim that distinction?

A Step Back in Time

Mount Tabor's story began in 1894 when Portland started building reservoirs here. By 1909, the city expanded its vision and created the public park we enjoy today.

The park bears the creative fingerprints of renowned landscape architect John C. Olmsted, whose initial design was later refined by Portland Parks Superintendent Emanuel Tillman Mische. Their vision gave us the thoughtfully designed staircases, gently winding parkways, and numerous trails that blend seamlessly with native plants.

The three historic reservoirs aren't just pretty water features - they're living history that helped earn the park a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Nature's Playground

Mount Tabor blends forested hideaways with open meadows, creating diverse micro-environments within the park. Towering Douglas firs dominate the landscape, providing homes for a surprising variety of wildlife.

Bird enthusiasts, grab your binoculars! The park comes alive during spring migration when colorful warblers pass through. Even in the off-season, you might spot Band-tailed Pigeons and numerous other feathered residents going about their day.

Get Moving

Whether you're a casual stroller or dedicated hiker, Mount Tabor has a trail for you. Three main loops cater to different fitness levels: the gentle 1-mile Red Trail for beginners, the moderate 1.7-mile Green Trail for those wanting a bit more, and the more challenging 3-mile Blue Trail for a proper workout. Each path winds through lush forests with periodic city views to remind you that civilization isn't far away.

Beyond hiking, the park offers tennis courts, basketball courts, and volleyball courts for the sports-minded. There's a well-equipped playground near the main entrance by the ranger station that kids love. When summer hits, the park's grassy areas become prime real estate for picnics and afternoon lounging.

Community Spirit

Mount Tabor isn't just about natural beauty - it's a community gathering place. The annual Adult Soapbox Derby in August brings out competitors and spectators for a day of downhill thrills. On Wednesdays, the park closes to vehicle traffic, creating a pedestrian and cyclist paradise.

As the day winds down, the park offers some of the best sunset views over downtown Portland. And if you're looking for a good vantage point for Fourth of July fireworks, Mount Tabor offers an excellent view of displays across the city.
