About the Location
A Glimpse into History
Nestled in the heart of the Laurelhurst neighborhood, this 26.81-acre park has been a Portland treasure since 1909. Originally part of former mayor William S. Ladd's estate, the park took shape in 1912 under the skilled hands of Emanuel Mische, who designed it following the Olmsted Plan principles.
In 1919, the Pacific Coast Parks Association recognized it as the "most beautiful park on the West Coast." Fast forward to February 2001, and Laurelhurst made history again as the first city park to earn a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
Nature's Canvas
At the park's heart lies Firwood Lake, a serene 3-acre body of water with humble beginnings as a cattle watering hole and local swimming spot. Today, this spring-fed pond creates a tranquil centerpiece, attracting various waterfowl, fish, and turtles.
Tree enthusiasts will appreciate the park's impressive arboreal diversity. Towering London Planes stand alongside majestic Douglas Firs and Sequoias. Keep an eye out for the fascinating Dawn Redwood - a deciduous conifer that puts on a stunning show of red and brown before dropping its needles each autumn.
Thoughtful Design
The park unfolds in distinct spaces that invite different experiences - from the intimate concert grove to the expansive broad meadows, from the sociable picnic grove to the colorful Rhododendron Hill.
As you wander the curving paths, you'll notice how views reveal themselves in surprising ways - a hallmark of the City Beautiful Movement that inspired this naturalistic landscape. Many trees throughout the park feature identification labels, offering a bit of botanical education during your stroll.
Recreation for Everyone
For both active recreation and relaxation, Laurelhurst offers plenty of options. Active visitors can make use of the tennis courts, basketball courts, recently added pickleball courts, or try out some moves at the skate park with its variety of ramps.
Bringing your four-legged friend? The park includes an off-leash dog area (though it isn't fenced). Families will find a playground with updated equipment sheltered by tall trees, providing shade for both playing children and adults.
Community Cornerstone
Over the decades, Laurelhurst has served as a backdrop for Portland life. From Rose Festival Queen's Coronations held on floating boats in the pond to Easter Sunrise Services and countless family gatherings.
The tradition continues today with modern events like Movies in the Park, Friday evening Comedy in the Park during summer months, the magical Water Lantern Festival, and various musical performances. Open daily from 5 AM to 10:30 PM, this park provides a peaceful space away from the bustle of the city.
