About the Location
Historic Greenspace
Nestled in the heart of downtown Portland, the South Park Blocks stretch for 12 blocks like a green ribbon, running from Portland State University northward. Dating back to 1852, this linear park has become so woven into the fabric of the city that The Oregonian dubbed it Portland's "extended family room."
Stroll along the wide central pathways and you'll find yourself under the protective canopy of mature elms, oaks, and maples. The simple but effective design features grassy areas, rose bushes, and plenty of benches where you can sit and watch the world go by. It's an urban space that feels peaceful regardless of the season.
Cultural Hub
The park's edges are lined with some of Portland's cultural heavy-hitters - the Portland Art Museum, Oregon Historical Society, and Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall all call this area home.
As you wander through, you'll encounter an impressive collection of statues and monuments. There's a bronze Theodore Roosevelt on horseback, a thoughtful-looking Abraham Lincoln, and the beautiful Shemanski Fountain featuring Rebecca at the Well. At the northern end stands the Simon Benson Memorial, honoring the timber baron whose philanthropy shaped much of Portland. The park occasionally hosts rotating art installations too, adding fresh creative energy to this already artistic space.
Community Gathering Place
These blocks function as a community gathering place in Portland. From March through December, the Portland Farmers Market transforms Saturdays into a bustling hub of activity, drawing up to 14,000 people hunting for a wonderful heirloom tomato or artisanal cheese.
The park hosts everything from community potlucks to food markets. You might stumble upon a tiny house exhibition one day or find yourself caught up in an impromptu concert the next. Street performers and musicians often set up along the pathways, their melodies floating through the trees and adding to the park's relaxed vibe.
Amenities and Recreation
Throughout the blocks, you'll discover benches perfectly positioned for people-watching or quiet contemplation. Some even come with built-in chess boards - bring your own pieces and challenge a friend or stranger to a game.
Getting here couldn't be easier, with Portland's tram and bus lines running nearby or through parts of the park. This central location makes it an ideal jumping-off point for downtown exploration.
If you're visiting with kids, there are two playgrounds to discover - one near the southern end by SW Jackson Street on the PSU campus, and another featuring a cool xylophone/metallophone on NW Davis Street. Public restrooms are available when nature calls.
Dog-Friendly Environment
Local dog owners have made these blocks part of their daily routines, and for good reason. The park welcomes four-legged friends (though they need to stay leashed), and multiple waste stations make it easy to clean up after them.
On hot summer days, both humans and dogs appreciate the shade cast by the park's impressive tree canopy - a natural air conditioner in the middle of the city.
Historical Recognition
In 2022, the South Park Blocks received official recognition when they were listed on the National Register of Historic Places - a nod to their significant role in Portland's cultural landscape.
While honoring its past, the park continues to evolve. Recent master planning efforts aim to preserve its historic character while making it more accessible and responsive to community needs for generations to come.
