About Peninsula Park in Portland
Peninsula Park is a 16.27-acre public park located in the Piedmont neighborhood of North Portland, Oregon. Established in 1909, it was originally the site of a roadhouse and racetrack before being transformed into one of Portland's earliest city parks.
The park's centerpiece is its historic sunken rose garden, designed in 1912 by Emanuel Mische in the style of a formal French parterre. This two-acre garden features approximately 5,000 rose plants representing about 60 varieties, arranged in a symmetrical pattern around a central fountain. The rose garden was Portland's first public rose garden and played a significant role in the city's early 20th-century rose culture, even hosting annual rose shows in its early years.
Peninsula Park is also home to Portland's first community center, built in 1913 in the Italian villa style. The park features a historic octagonal bandstand, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and overlooks the rose garden. Early 20th-century street lamps and intricate brick walkways contribute to the park's historical ambiance.
In addition to its historical features, Peninsula Park offers a range of recreational facilities for visitors of all ages. The park includes an outdoor swimming pool, multiple sports courts, and play areas for children. A splash pad provides relief on hot summer days, while covered picnic areas offer spaces for community gatherings.
Peninsula Park's location at the end of North Rosa Parks Way has made it a focal point for community events and social gatherings. In recent years, it has been the site of various community activities, including social justice gatherings and protests, reflecting its role as an important public space in North Portland.
