About the Location
A Bit of History
Located in Portland's Rose City Park neighborhood, Normandale Park spans a generous 13.69 acres of green space. The city acquired this land back in 1940 after Normandale elementary school closed its doors. Throughout the 1940s, the park continued to evolve, with notable improvements taking shape in 1947.
The Legendary Erv Lind Stadium
At the heart of Normandale sits Erv Lind Stadium, a baseball and softball facility with quite a story. Named in 1964 for Erwin "Erv" Lind, this stadium honors the coach who led the Erv Lind Florists women's fast-pitch softball team from 1937 until his passing in 1964.
It's not just any stadium - this place has hosted championship tournaments and earned its spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 2024. The recognition celebrates both its role in women's sports history and its legacy as a welcoming competitive athletic space. Today, you'll still find softball games and tournaments bringing the stadium to life.
For the Dog Lovers
For those with dogs, The park features a 1.5-acre off-leash dog area that's fully fenced and thoughtfully divided into three sections. There's a space for all dogs, a dedicated area for smaller or less active pups, and a third alternate section that allows for flexible use.
You can find water stations throughout the dog park - a nice touch for those longer playdates. The ground is covered with wood chips to help keep mud at bay during Portland's rainy seasons, however you might still encounter some puddles after heavy downpours.
Recreation for Everyone
Normandale offers various recreational options. The park features two playgrounds - a toddler-friendly one and another designed for older kids. Both benefit from partial shade cast by the park's mature trees.
Sports fans can make use of the baseball fields, while the open grassy areas work perfectly for impromptu games or just lounging around. Across the park, paved paths and nature trails invite you to take a casual stroll or get your steps in.
Practical Stuff
The park comes equipped with picnic tables scattered across the grounds - great for a family lunch or gathering with friends. When nature calls, portable restrooms are available near the ball fields.
Normandale keeps generous hours, welcoming visitors from 5AM until midnight daily, giving you plenty of time to enjoy this urban oasis whenever fits your schedule.
Beyond a Park
Over the years, Normandale has become an important space for the community. It accommodates diverse interests and age groups - families with children, dog owners, athletes, and nature lovers all use the park.
The mature trees transform with the seasons, offering color changes that enhance this green space within Portland's urban landscape.
