About the Location
Park Overview
Located in southeast Portland's Woodstock neighborhood, Woodstock Park is a 14.11-acre green space that has served the community since 1921. Managed by Portland Parks & Recreation, this charming space sits neatly between SE 47th and 50th Avenues, bordered by SE Steele Street to the north and SE Harold Street and Woodstock School to the south.
One of the first things you'll notice are the magnificent mature trees that create a natural canopy within the grounds. The shade is especially welcome on hot summer afternoons when you want to enjoy the outdoors while escaping the heat.
Recreational Facilities
For those looking to stay active, Woodstock Park offers several recreational options. The baseball fields host everything from high school softball games to casual community matchups and are kept in great condition year-round.
Fancy a different kind of workout? The park also boasts tennis courts and basketball hoops, plus plenty of open green space that's ideal for impromptu soccer games or tossing a frisbee around. Paved walking paths meander through the park, offering a peaceful route for your morning jog or evening stroll beneath those gorgeous towering trees.
The playground might not be the newest or most elaborate in Portland, but it has a certain old-school charm with its swings, slides, merry-go-round, and teeter-totters that appeal to kids of various ages.
Dog-Friendly Area
Dog owners will appreciate Woodstock Park's off-leash area. Unlike traditional enclosed dog parks, the off-leash area here gives pups room to truly stretch their legs without feeling confined. Don't worry about proximity to traffic - the area is positioned well away from busy streets, creating a safe space for four-legged friends to play.
The spacious grassy terrain features some gentle hills that give dogs (and their humans) a bit of extra exercise. The lush grass is gentler on paws than the gravel or woodchips found at other dog parks in the area.
Picnic and Gathering Spaces
When you're ready to refuel, head to one of the picnic areas scattered across the park. Tables nestled under the shade trees create perfect spots for family lunches, catching up with friends, or simply enjoying a peaceful solo meal surrounded by nature.
The park regularly hosts community events throughout the year. Throughout the year, you might catch high school softball tournaments, outdoor movie nights under the stars, nostalgic Woodstock School reunions, or the annual "Unimproved Road" event that locals look forward to.
Amenities
You'll discover public restrooms available during the warmer months, along with drinking fountains scattered across the grounds when you need to hydrate. There's no shortage of benches for taking a load off and watching the world go by.
Woodstock Park's layout allows for multiple groups and activities to coexist without the space feeling crowded. You can have a family birthday party, a pickup basketball game, and a meditative yoga session all happening simultaneously with plenty of room to spare.
Recent Changes
It's worth noting that January 2025 brought some changes to the park. Due to safety concerns and significant wear and tear, the play structure was removed. The old concrete wading pool, which hadn't been functional for years, was also taken out.
Currently, there aren't funds allocated to replace either the play structure or the wading pool.
Art Installation
For those who appreciate public art, keep an eye out for "Park Place," an interesting installation created by Lloyd Hamrol. This thoughtful piece features three distinct gathering spots with benches built at alternating heights - deliberately designed to accommodate both children and adults.
The columns cleverly echo the existing brickwork found across the park and pay homage to the beautiful trees that have become such an integral part of Woodstock Park's identity and charm.
