Sprawling across 101-102 acres along Salem's eastern border near Interstate 5, Cascades Gateway Park provides a natural retreat from city life with its mix of wild and developed spaces.

Winding through the park, you can find both natural trails and paved pathways that invite exploration of its verdant landscapes. While the park has faced its share of challenges in the past, recent cleanup initiatives have improved this urban green space.

Water Features

The heart of the park is undoubtedly Walter Wirth Lake, a charming pond where fishing enthusiasts can try their luck with the regularly stocked trout. The lake receives fresh fish several times during the year, making it a reliable spot to cast a line.

The lake's edges are typically dotted with ducks and geese going about their day, adding a peaceful soundtrack to your visit. If you're looking to get out on the water, the lake is also suitable for kayaking - an ideal way to spend a calm morning or afternoon.

Recreational Activities

Disc golf enthusiasts will appreciate the 18-hole course that offers quality tee pads and a nice variety of holes. The terrain is mostly open and flat, making it accessible even for beginners, however be prepared for those ever-present Salem winds that can add an unpredictable element to your game.

Beyond disc golf, you'll discover ball fields suitable for various sports and even horseshoe pits tucked away in the back section of the park.

Kids haven't been forgotten either - the playground equipment provides a space where younger visitors can burn off energy while parents take a breather.

Dog Areas

Four-legged family members get special treatment with a fenced-in dog park divided into sections for small and large dogs. The large dog area is particularly generous, giving energetic pups plenty of space to sprint and socialize safely off-leash.

If you're exploring the rest of the park, your dogs are welcome to join you, but they'll need to stay leashed on the trails and in general areas.

Picnic Areas

When hunger strikes, the park offers several options for outdoor dining. You can reserve the Beaver Grove Shelter or Blue Gill A & B for planned gatherings, or simply take advantage of the drop-in picnic areas with tables and BBQ facilities for impromptu outdoor meals. The area near the playground across the bridge is particularly nice for casual picnics.

Facilities

When nature calls, you can find portable toilets stationed at various points throughout the park, especially near the pond. During busier seasons, permanent restroom facilities may open up as well.

The parking area is spacious enough to accommodate visitors, but you might notice it needs a bit of TLC in spots.
