About Bryan Johnston Park
A Peaceful Hilltop Escape
Perched on a hilltop in Salem, Oregon, Bryan Johnston Park offers excellent views of the city below and an immediate sense of spaciousness that's hard to find elsewhere. The park bears the name of local businessman Bryan Johnston, who generously donated this land to Salem's parks department back in the late twentieth century.
On clear days, the elevated position offers truly expansive views that make the climb worthwhile. The gentle rolling hills throughout create natural undulations in the landscape - it's these subtle terrain variations that give the park its distinctive character.
Trails for Every Pace
Winding through the park are various trails and walkways great for whatever movement suits your mood - a contemplative stroll, a heart-pumping jog, or a casual bike ride. You'll come across both rustic bark dust paths and wider concrete walkways, with the latter thoughtfully illuminated for those early morning or evening adventures.
Many locals have made these interconnected trails part of their regular cardio routine, using the natural inclines for added resistance. The well-maintained, lit pathways make this spot particularly accessible regardless of when you prefer to get your steps in.
Not Your Average Playground
Bryan Johnston Park features a distinctive playground area with equipment that encourages both imagination and physical activity. The area is thoughtfully divided into two sections: one for the little ones ages 3-5 and another for older children ages 6-12.
The play structures feature metal components that differ from typical playground equipment you might see elsewhere. Parents and grandparents often mention how engaging the playground is, though adult supervision is recommended given the metallic nature of the structures.

Room to Play
The park includes a basketball court with a single hoop - meant for shooting around or small pickup games. Beyond that, generous open grassy areas provide plenty of space for tossing a football, playing catch, or simply stretching out on a blanket.
The versatile space accommodates various family activities, from birthday celebrations to teaching children to ride bikes along the gentle paths.
Picnic Perfect
Around the park, you'll discover numerous picnic tables, many thoughtfully positioned under the shade of mature trees. These shaded areas provide good spots to enjoy lunch during warm Oregon summer days.
The tables offer convenient places to fuel up or simply take a moment to rest while exploring all the park has to offer.
ADPrivate - Willamette Valley Wine Tour From Portland (tasting fees included)
The Northern Willamette Valley is just an hour’s drive from the Portland metro area. This close proximity to Portland creates a perfect opportunity for a day of touring Oregon’s wine country with Sea to Summit, Portland Oregon's original tour and adventure company.
Natural Charm
Bryan Johnston Park has a variety of plant and animal life throughout the grounds. Keep your eyes open for evergreen trees, seasonal flowers in bloom, and small wildlife including rabbits, various birds, and squirrels darting about.
Four-legged friends are welcome here, but they need to remain on leash at all times. You'll come across dog waste stations with bag dispensers strategically placed around the park to make clean-up easy.
Good to Know
The park welcomes visitors from 5AM to 8PM daily. One thing to note - there are no permanent restroom facilities available here, which is definitely the most significant drawback mentioned by regular parkgoers.
Parking is somewhat limited around the park's perimeter, which can be challenging during peak times. Despite these minor inconveniences, Bryan Johnston Park continues to be a cherished destination for families, dog walkers, and anyone seeking a tranquil green space in Salem.
