About the Location

A Tiny Park with a Giant Heart

Waldo Park is a remarkably tiny city park. At just 12 by 20 feet (3.7 by 6.1 m), it's one of the smallest parks in the world. The star of this micro-park? A magnificent giant sequoia tree that's been reaching skyward since 1872, when Judge William Waldo (son of an 1842 pioneer) planted it with hopeful hands.

A Tree with Its Own History

Back in 1936, the Salem City Council made the delightful decision to officially declare this tiny plot a city park. The move came thanks to the passionate advocacy of the American War Mothers and some influential Salem locals who couldn't bear to see this natural treasure threatened.

Judge Waldo himself had worked to protect the sequoia during his lifetime, and the park's establishment ensured his arboreal legacy would continue to thrive for generations.

Where to Find This Miniature Marvel

You'll find this unique green space at the intersection of Union and Summer streets. The sequoia, now towering about 85 feet (25.9 m) high, completely dominates its tiny domain.

Interestingly, the tree has become so important that Summer Street - a major Salem thoroughfare - actually narrows temporarily to accommodate the sequoia's impressive girth. Beyond the magnificent tree, you can find just a small patch of grass and a bench for contemplating this living giant.

The Visitor Experience

While you won't be playing frisbee or softball here, Waldo Park offers something equally valuable: a moment of quiet connection with a living piece of Salem's history. If you're feeling whimsical, it could be an ideal spot for a solo picnic or an intimate conversation.

The nearby creek adds a pleasant natural soundtrack to this urban oasis. Most people who stop by are initially amused by the park's tiny footprint but leave with genuine appreciation for this preserved natural treasure.

Well-Deserved Recognition

The sequoia's significance hasn't gone unnoticed - it proudly bears the designation of Oregon Heritage Tree. This little park shows how even the smallest spaces can hold significant natural and historical value.
