About the Location
Park Overview
Right next to the Little Lehigh Creek in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Lehigh Parkway sprawls across 629 acres of natural beauty. This expansive green space follows the creek for about 3 miles, creating a peaceful corridor from downtown Allentown all the way to the Emmaus border.
Dating back to the 1920s and 1930s, the parkway offers over 6 miles of picturesque trails that meander through woods and open meadows alongside the gentle creek. The crushed stone paths create a pleasant surface for exploring, with several bridges providing access to both sides of the Little Lehigh.
Historic Features
As you wander through the park, you'll encounter fascinating historical treasures like Bogert's Bridge, a charming covered bridge from 1841. The parkway is dotted with remnants of earlier times - 18th and 19th century barns, old mills, historic houses, and lime kilns that tell silent stories of the area's rich past.
The Museum of Indian Culture (sometimes called the Museum of Native American Culture) offers another cultural dimension to your visit. Keep an eye out for their occasional festivals celebrating Native American heritage - they're worth experiencing if your timing is right.
Fishing and Wildlife
If you're an angling enthusiast, you're in luck. The Little Lehigh Creek is a renowned trout stream that's regularly stocked. Right in the park, you'll discover the Lil-Le-Hi Trout Nursery (or Fish Hatchery) where over 30,000 trout are raised each year. It's a hit with families - kids especially love watching and feeding the fish swimming in the clear pools.
The natural setting attracts diverse wildlife. Visit around dusk, and you might spot deer grazing in quiet clearings. Birdwatchers can keep their binoculars ready for bald eagles, great blue herons, and numerous other feathered residents that call this place home.
Recreation Opportunities
The wide, grassy areas around the park are well-suited for spreading out a blanket for picnics, tossing a frisbee, or playing catch. If you're looking for more structured activities, there are bridle paths for horseback riding and an 18-hole disc golf course that was added in 2005 (though it could use a bit more upkeep).
Walking, jogging, and cycling are incredibly popular here, with convenient water fountains placed roughly every mile along the trails. The path network consists mostly of gravel with some paved sections, forming a complete loop of about 6 miles.
Seasonal Activities
The park transforms with the seasons, but winter brings perhaps the most magical time with the annual "Lights in the Parkway" holiday display. This drive-through experience showcases dazzling Christmas lights that have become a cherished tradition for many local families.
Amenities
You'll discover restrooms and portable toilets at strategic locations within the park, particularly near bridge crossings. The water fountains along the trails are well-suited for staying hydrated during your adventure. And if you're a dog owner, you'll appreciate how pet-friendly the park is - just remember to keep your furry friend leashed and clean up after them.
Just minutes from downtown, Lehigh Parkway offers a refreshing natural escape for Allentown residents and visitors alike. Whether you're seeking exercise, history, wildlife, or just a peaceful moment by the creek, this urban oasis is a great choice. The park welcomes visitors daily from 5:30AM to 9:45PM.
