Natural Features
South Mountain Big Rock Park is a 77-acre natural area located in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The park straddles Salisbury Township and Upper Saucon Township in Lehigh County.
Its most prominent feature is Bauer Rock, a towering mass of dark-colored gneiss that rises 40 feet above the crest of South Mountain.
Trail Access
Visitors can access Bauer Rock via a short hiking trail from the parking area on East Rock Road. The trail leads through dense forest to this impressive geological formation.
The rock offers excellent views of Southern Lehigh County, particularly after the leaves have fallen.
Recreational Opportunities
The park provides opportunities for hiking, nature study, and wildlife observation. Its forested terrain is home to various plant and animal species.
Historical Significance
The area has historical significance as well, with remnants of old mining sites from South Mountain's industrial past that have since been reclaimed by nature.
