About the Location

Scenic Landscape

Spanning 66 acres, the park offers a blend of natural beauty and recreational facilities for visitors to enjoy. The park's name, "Burholme," means "house in a woodland setting," which aptly describes its surroundings.

The park's landscape features lush green spaces and tranquil pathways, providing a peaceful retreat for those seeking respite from urban life. Its elevated location offers impressive views, with Center City Philadelphia visible from the mansion's cupola on clear days.

Rich History

The park has a rich history tied to the Ryerss family, prominent Philadelphians who once owned the estate. Robert W. Ryerss, the last descendant of the family, bequeathed the property to the city of Philadelphia to be used as a public park, museum, and lending library - "Free to the people forever".

This generous act has resulted in the preservation of both the park and the historic Ryerss Mansion.

Museum and Library

At the heart of Burholme Park stands the Ryerss Museum and Library, housed in the former family mansion built in 1859. The museum showcases an eclectic collection of paintings, sculptures, family heirlooms, and Asian art and artifacts, offering visitors a glimpse into the life and interests of the Ryerss family.

Recreation Options

Burholme Park caters to a variety of recreational interests, making it a popular destination for families and sports enthusiasts alike. The park's large hill becomes a favored spot for sledding during winter months, adding to its year-round appeal.

Nearby Attractions

Adjacent to the park are Jeanes Hospital and Fox Chase Cancer Center, as well as the Burholme Golf Center, which offers additional family-friendly activities such as mini-golf and a driving range.
