About the Location
A Green Retreat in South Philly
Tucked away at the corner of 12th and Catharine Streets in South Philadelphia's Hawthorne neighborhood lies a small retreat that locals cherish. Hawthorne Park stretches across three-quarters of an acre, offering charm and community connection despite its modest size.
Having opened its gates in 2012, this green space is relatively new to Philly's park scene, but it didn't take long for it to become the neighborhood's favorite outdoor hangout spot.
From Vacant Lot to Vibrant Space
Before the trees and benches, this plot was just an empty lot next to the Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza housing development. The park's transformation came about through true community effort - local organizations, residents, and city officials all rolled up their sleeves to make it happen.
Eco-friendly design choices like permeable paving and native plant species show thoughtful planning went into this space. The trees planted during its creation have matured over the last decade, now casting welcome shadows across the grounds.
A Thoughtful Design
The park centers around an open lawn where you can spread out a blanket or toss a frisbee. What's really interesting is how the park sits slightly elevated, with walls along 12th and Catharine creating a natural boundary from the bustling streets.
This clever design gives Hawthorne a cozy, courtyard feel that makes it well-suited for family time outdoors. Find the right spot, and you'll catch glimpses of Center City's skyline peeking above the surrounding rowhouses - a little reminder that you're still in the heart of Philly.
Come Play, Relax, Unwind
Despite its compact footprint, Hawthorne Park offers plenty of ways to enjoy your time outside. Walking paths connect various seating areas with benches, tables, and lounge chairs throughout the park.
Some tables come with built-in game boards for chess and checkers, good for an impromptu game while enjoying the fresh air. The smart layout makes the park feel surprisingly spacious, even when others are around.
Where the Neighborhood Comes Together
More than just a pretty green space, Hawthorne has become the neighborhood's living room. Year-round, you'll discover outdoor movie screenings, yoga classes, jazz nights, and various live performances bringing people together.
Much credit goes to the Friends of Hawthorne Park, dedicated volunteers who keep the space beautiful and organize community programs, including seasonal clean-up days that help maintain this shared treasure.
Four-Legged Friends Welcome
Dog owners, take note - this park is a hit with the canine crowd. You'll discover dog waste bag stations and trash cans to keep things clean, plus enough grassy area for leashed pups to stretch their legs.
With a nice mix of sunny spots and shaded areas, both you and your furry friend can find comfort no matter when you visit.
