About the Location
The Heart of Philly
Tucked in the middle of Center City, Love Park has been a Philadelphia staple since 1965. Built right over an underground parking garage (practical, right?), this space was officially named John F. Kennedy Plaza in 1967 to honor the late president, but most locals wouldn't recognize it by that name.
What really put this park on the map? Robert Indiana's LOVE sculpture that landed here during America's big 200th birthday bash in 1976. What was meant to be a temporary installation became permanent in 1978 when the city purchased it, and the nickname "Love Park" stuck. These days, there's often a line of people waiting to take photos with these iconic red letters.
A Fresh New Look
Sitting at the end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and facing Philadelphia City Hall, Love Park underwent renovations between 2016 and 2018. The sea of concrete that once dominated the space was replaced by more green areas.
The redesign brought in lawns, gardens, and cleverly designed stormwater basins with various plants, all while making sure you can still get those postcard-worthy views of City Hall and the Parkway. Around the park, you'll discover tables and chairs where you can take a load off, have lunch, or simply watch the city go by.
Splash and Play
At the heart of Love Park sits its fountain - not the original single-spout version from 1969, but a newer, more impressive water feature added during the renovation. It's become a popular gathering point in the park.
During Philadelphia's warmer months, the fountain transforms into an urban oasis where kids splash and play to beat the heat. If you're bringing little ones, you might want to pack a change of clothes - they'll likely be drawn to the water like magnets!
Far From Just a Pretty Space
Before the renovation, Love Park was internationally famous in an unexpected circle - skateboarding. Though officially prohibited now, the park's legacy in skateboarding culture lives on.
Today, the park is used by office workers eating lunch, tourists getting their bearings, and locals meeting up. It regularly hosts events, demonstrations, and seasonal activities including the charming Christmas Village during the holidays. If you're around during summer, keep an eye out for free yoga sessions that sometimes take place on the lawns.
Good to Know
Love Park's central location puts you within easy walking distance of many Philadelphia highlights. One thing to note: the park doesn't have permanent restrooms, however you might find portable toilets sometimes. Otherwise, nearby businesses are your best bet when nature calls.
Four-legged friends are welcome here, making it a nice stop if you're exploring the city with your dog. And for art enthusiasts, don't miss the AMOR sculpture (Spanish for "love") located nearby - a perfect companion piece to the park's namesake installation.
