About the Location
A River's Edge Retreat
Right next to the Delaware River waterfront in Philadelphia, Race Street Pier provides a refreshing urban escape with excellent water views. Opened in 2011, this pier was the first new public space to emerge on the Central Delaware River Waterfront as part of Philly's ambitious riverfront revival.
What makes this spot special is how it honors its 1896 roots as a shipping pier through a thoughtful bi-level design - combining an elevated promenade with a more laid-back lower deck great for hanging out and soaking in the scenery.
Two Levels, Two Vibes
The upper level, aptly named the Grand Sky Promenade, gradually rises 12 feet toward the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. It's paved with Trex - an eco-friendly decking material made from reclaimed plastic and wood that feels good underfoot whether you're out for a morning jog or an evening stroll.
Connecting the two levels is a multi-tiered seating area where you can catch your breath while taking in the river, bridge, and city skyline. The lower terrace offers a more relaxed feel with its lawn space, garden beds, and plenty of spots to sit and unwind.
As evening falls, nearly 200 LED solar light blocks embedded in the walkway begin to glow, transforming the pier into a softly lit nighttime retreat.
A Green Touch in the Concrete City
The pier's landscaping does double duty - managing stormwater runoff while bringing much-needed greenery to the urban environment. Steel planters filled with shade-loving grasses and perennials add splashes of color that shift with the seasons.
Around the perimeter, railings lean at a 65-degree angle toward the pier, subtly echoing the upward slope toward the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. The strategically placed trees create welcome shade patches throughout the space, making even mid-summer visits comfortable.
Nature Meets Urban Life
An interesting feature is how the pier functions as a tidal register. You can actually track the high and low tides of the Delaware right here. During high tide, the river climbs to within 4.5 feet of the lower level, giving you a rare up-close connection with the water while still in the heart of the city.
If you're into photography, you'll discover some of the most dramatic views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge anywhere in Philadelphia. Early birds often gather here specifically for sunrise shots, when the morning light paints the bridge and water in golden hues.
What's Happening at the Pier
Open daily from 7AM to 11PM, Race Street Pier hosts various activities during the year. From April through November, free yoga classes bring fitness enthusiasts to the waterfront, with sunrise sessions drawing particularly dedicated locals.
The pier has also become a favorite for picnics, wedding photos, and simply unwinding. During holidays - especially New Year's Eve and Fourth of July - it offers prime viewing for fireworks displays over the river.
The Experience
You'll likely notice the sense of calm here despite being just minutes from downtown. The cool river breezes, multiple seating options (from proper benches to casual grass areas), and panoramic views create a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere.
Dog owners, take note: the pier is dog-friendly, however you'll need to clean up after your four-legged friends. The space attracts an interesting mix of people - morning joggers, lunch-break escapees, sunset-chasers, and everyone in between.
One practical thing to know: there aren't public restrooms on the pier itself, but you can find facilities nearby at Cherry Street Pier, which also features art installations if you're looking to extend your waterfront wanderings.
