About the Location

A Glimpse of History in the City

Found in Philadelphia's urban landscape, Matthias Baldwin Park is a two-acre green haven with a story to tell. Dedicated in 1991 as part of the Franklin Town development, this space was renamed in 2011 to honor Matthias Baldwin, a 19th-century industrialist and abolitionist whose locomotive factory once operated in this very area.

Walking through the park, you're actually treading on the former grounds of the Baldwin Locomotive Works - a connection to Philly's industrial past that lives on in this urban green space.

Nature Meets Art

A distinctive feature of this park is the artistic vision behind it. Landscape artist Athena Tacha created something beyond your typical city park with an environmental sculpture called "Connections." The heart of the park features terraced planting beds that rise gradually from 6 inches to 7 feet, forming a natural urban meadow effect.

These terraces contain perennials, grasses, and low-maintenance shrubs that change in color and texture throughout the seasons. The design creates an almost amphitheater-like space that's especially attractive in autumn when the foliage turns to warm hues.

Dotted throughout are distinctive rock sculptures that add artistic flair while complementing the plantings. These stone formations provide focal points for quiet reflection.

What You'll Find

A loop path circles the central terraces, lined with benches where you can pause and soak in the atmosphere. Whether you're taking a quick stroll or settling in with a book, the path offers different views of the park.

The park contains approximately fifty trees representing 32 different species and varieties, including Cedar of Lebanon specimens on the east and west sides. Each tree has its own informational plaque, adding an educational element to your visit.

A Little Free Library is available for you to take or leave a book, adding a community touch to the space.

The park provides views of Philadelphia's skyline. Depending on where you stand, you might feel completely immersed in the city or surprisingly secluded in what feels like a private garden.

Far From Just Pretty

Baldwin Park offers a quiet retreat in an evolving neighborhood, where you can take a break from city life.

Dog owners have made this a popular spot for walks (with dog waste bags conveniently provided). The open grassy areas provide space for dogs while their owners enjoy the surroundings.

Occasionally, the park transforms into a community gathering spot, hosting events like outdoor movie nights that bring neighbors together under the stars.

The space stays beautiful thanks to a partnership between Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and the Friends of Matthias Baldwin Park, a dedicated volunteer group that helps maintain this special urban green space.

Good to Know

The park doesn't have restrooms, but you can find public facilities at the nearby library or on the ground floor of the Sheraton hotel if needed.

You can visit daily from 7AM to 10PM, making it fantastic for morning coffee, lunch breaks, or evening unwinding. There are plenty of benches for sitting, plus open areas where you can spread out a blanket for a casual picnic.

If you forget to pack snacks, don't worry - several eateries nearby offer convenient options for grabbing something to enjoy in the park.
