A Community Haven in Point Breeze
Ralph Brooks Park is a community park located in the Point Breeze neighborhood of South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The park, situated at the intersection of 20th and Tasker Streets, underwent a significant revitalization in 2015 as part of a collaborative effort involving various organizations and community members.
The park was originally created to honor the memory of Ralph Brooks Jr., a 7-year-old local resident who tragically lost his life to gun violence in the area. Following its renovation, Ralph Brooks Park has become a vibrant community space that promotes athletics, safety, health, and the arts.
Sports and Recreation
The park's redevelopment included the installation of a full-size basketball court with bleachers, which has become a focal point for community engagement. The Ralph Brooks Community Basketball League, run by Al Custis, now fields 30 teams ranging from middle school age to over 40, attracting over 300 people weekly during summer months.
In addition to the sports facilities, the park features a state-of-the-art playground for children, providing a safe and modern play area.
Green Spaces and Gathering Areas
The renovation incorporated a community garden, allowing residents to grow fresh vegetables and promoting healthy eating habits within the neighborhood.
The park's design incorporates multiple vacant lots along the block, which were converted into additional community gardens, a concessions space, and seating areas. This expansion has created a more comprehensive recreational space for residents of all ages.
Art and Culture
Ralph Brooks Park also showcases public art, including murals by renowned artist Stephen "ESPO" Powers, created through the Mural Arts Program. These artistic elements add visual interest and cultural significance to the park, reflecting the community's identity and aspirations.
