About the Location
A Mansion's Legacy
Believe it or not, what we now know as Mellon Park was once the sprawling estate of Richard B. Mellon, whose mansion was the largest in all of Pittsburgh. Established in 1943, this 33-acre green haven straddles Fifth Avenue, stretching from Shady to Penn Avenue across the Shadyside and Point Breeze neighborhoods.
With its varied landscapes and thoughtfully preserved features, the park offers a beautiful retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Garden Retreats
The Walled Garden stands as a centerpiece of Mellon Park. Originally part of the Mellon estate and designed in 1929 by Vitale and Geiffert, this formal garden is enclosed by elegant brick and limestone walls, featuring wide walking paths and borders filled with perennials.
In 2010, the garden got a magical upgrade with Janet Zweig's art installation "7:11 AM 11.20.1979 79°55'W 40°27'N". When night falls, 150 fiber optic lights embedded in the lawn illuminate to recreate the exact night sky from a specific moment in time - it's like having the stars beneath your feet.
There's also a charming fountain area surrounded by gardens that offers a great spot to sit and clear your mind on a busy day.
A Tree Lover's Paradise
Tree enthusiasts will appreciate that Mellon Park houses over 100 different species, making it Pittsburgh's first public arboretum.
Take a self-guided tour by checking out the 35 specially marked trees with signs telling you what you're looking at and sharing fun facts about each species. The mature trees create plenty of shady spots - excellent for those hot summer days when you need a break from the sun.
Blooms and Botanicals
Beyond the historic Walled Garden, you can find a lovely rose garden that's worth visiting in any season. The botanical gardens feature labeled plants for the curious minds who want to know exactly what they're admiring.
Come summer, there's even a vegetable garden adding to the mix of greenery. The meticulously kept gardens make for great photo opportunities - if you're a professional photographer or just wanting to spruce up your Instagram feed.
Play and Relax
Mellon Park isn't just about pretty gardens and historic significance - it's a place to get active too. The park offers tennis courts, basketball courts, and baseball fields for sports enthusiasts.
Families with kids will appreciate the large playground in the northern section, plus a splash pad that's a lifesaver during Pittsburgh's warmer months. Throughout the park, you'll discover picnic areas nestled under shade trees - well-suited for anything from a solo lunch break to a family reunion.
The paved paths winding through the grounds make for pleasant walks, whether you're out for your morning jog or just taking a leisurely stroll.
Community Heart
This park really comes alive during community events. Since 1969, it has hosted "A Fair in the Park" every September, a craft fair that's become a popular tradition.
The grounds also serve as a gathering place for cultural celebrations including Juneteenth events and Chinese Cultural festivals, bringing Pittsburgh's diverse communities together. With its picturesque setting, it's no surprise that Mellon Park has become a go-to spot for weddings and photoshoots.
The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and holds a Pittsburgh Historic Designation.
Finding Your Way
Fifth Avenue splits the park into two distinct sections, each with its own character. The southern portion, which includes the historic Walled Garden, sits on a hill offering lovely views of the surroundings.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 11PM. Just note that parking can be limited, so you might want to consider taking public transportation - the bus service along Fifth Avenue will get you there without the parking headache.
