About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Found in Pittsburgh's Carrick neighborhood, Phillips Park carries quite a story. Before it became the green space we know today, it went by several names - Dilly's Grove, Southern Park, and Carrick Park.
Back in the day, this place was actually a "Trolley Park" - essentially the final stop on the transit line where folks could hop off and enjoy amusement rides, catch performances, and generally have a good time. Think of it as an early version of a weekend hangout spot!
How the Park Came to Be
In 1904, the City of Pittsburgh snagged this land for $29,000 (quite the investment back then!). Later, it was named after John MacFarlane Phillips, a local Carrick resident who made history by organizing Pennsylvania's very first Boy Scout troop.
You'll come across the park nestled between Brownsville Road and Route 51, just a stone's throw from Pittsburgh Carrick High School - making it an ideal after-school retreat for many local students.
Nature's Layout
The park spreads across a grassy hillside dotted with mature hardwood trees that have been there for decades. Fair warning though - parts of this park don't mess around when it comes to steepness! The hills create a distinct character that makes Phillips Park uniquely challenging and interesting.
Thanks to its elevated position, you can catch some nice views of the surrounding area. Just be careful navigating those slopes, especially as daylight fades.
Things to Do
The 9-hole disc golf course is a notable feature of the park. The course cleverly uses the park's hilly landscape to create elevated tee shots, generous fairways, speedy greens, and some tricky out-of-bounds areas.
The layout offers a fun challenge, though be aware that some holes border residential yards. This adds an interesting strategic element but might also mean saying goodbye to an errant disc if your throw goes astray!
Having been part of Pittsburgh's disc golf scene since the 1990s, this course continues to draw players from beginners to seasoned pros.
Community Spaces
Beyond disc golf, Phillips Park offers several sports facilities and play areas for various activities. Whether you're looking to play some active sports or enjoy a peaceful picnic under the trees, there's space for different interests here.
For the Dog Lovers
If you've got a four-legged friend, you'll be happy to know the park welcomes dog walkers. There's plenty of room for your pup to explore while you enjoy the natural surroundings. The varied terrain provides an interesting walk for both you and your dog.
