About the Location

History and Location

Positioned on Pittsburgh's North Side sits Riverview Park, a 259-acre urban retreat that's been around since 1894. This green space actually predates Pittsburgh's absorption of the City of Allegheny in 1907. What once was simple farmland is now characterized by dense forests and rolling hills.

The park is located between Perrysville Avenue, Woods Run, and Marshall Avenue, with hillsides that are popular among outdoor enthusiasts. Despite what its name might suggest, Riverview Park actually sits at a high elevation point inland - but it still offers nice views overlooking the city and rivers below.

Trails and Recreation

Riverview has an extensive network of wooded trails for hiking. The two-mile Riverview Loop is a local favorite, but be prepared to work those leg muscles - some of the inclines within the park can definitely count as your cardio for the day.

Beyond hiking, the park offers plenty of ways to play. Cool off at the swimming pool during summer months, let the kids loose at the playground, organize a game at the ball field, kick around on the artificial turf soccer/football field, or gather friends and family at one of the picnic shelters. During summer evenings, the park transforms into an outdoor entertainment venue with concerts and movies under the stars.

Dog-Friendly Features

Riverview Park is very accommodating for dogs. The park features two separate dog parks - one for the small floofs and another for the bigger breeds. Both areas are fully fenced, giving your four-legged friends plenty of space to zoom around off-leash. There are even water fountains designed for both human and canine thirsts.

If you and your furry companion prefer exploring together, the park's numerous trails welcome leashed dogs, making for perfect outdoor bonding time.

Historical Features

At the hilltop sits the Allegheny Observatory, a landmark dedicated to astronomical research that offers good views of downtown Pittsburgh. If you're curious about what goes on inside, tickets for observatory tours are occasionally available.

History buffs will appreciate the Chapel Shelter, a restored Presbyterian church that received a facelift in 2008. The beautiful gardens surrounding both the chapel shelter and observatory are particularly well-tended, adding splashes of color to your visit.

Park Amenities

Riverview has numerous picnic areas and pavilions within the grounds for gatherings. Several shelters are available for rent, complete with fire rings, lighting, and access to open fields - fantastic for impromptu games of frisbee or catch. The Chapel Shelter is a popular venue for weddings and events, providing shelter from Pittsburgh's occasionally unpredictable weather.

Families will appreciate the playground with its two separate jungle gyms designed for different age groups, all within a large fenced area for added safety. The swimming pool offers summer refreshment, but it keeps things simple with basic amenities.

When nature calls, you'll find permanent restroom facilities in main areas, with portable toilets positioned throughout more remote sections of the park. Parking is generally sufficient for everyday visits, but it might get tight during special events.

Environmental Significance

Riverview Park isn't just pretty - it's ecologically important too. The Mairdale watershed contributes to the park's environmental value, supporting diverse wildlife within the grounds. Don't be surprised if you spot deer while traversing the trails - they're regular residents here.

Looking ahead, park plans include the restoration of historic Watson's Cabin and ongoing work to revitalize the Snyder's Point natural area, ensuring that this urban forest continues to thrive.

Riverview Park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 11PM, offering a peaceful natural escape just a few miles from downtown Pittsburgh's hustle and bustle.
