Dexter Training Ground
About Dexter Training Ground
A Slice of History in Providence
Tucked into the West End of Providence, Rhode Island, Dexter Training Ground spreads across 9 acres of green space with a story to tell. Back in 1824, a local philanthropist named Ebenezer Knight Dexter gifted this land to the city, originally thinking it would serve as a spot for military drills and exercises.
Fast forward to today, and this historic park serves the dense West Broadway neighborhood and beyond.
Under the Canopy
Walk through Dexter Training Ground and you can find yourself strolling along paths sheltered by magnificent London Plane trees that cast dappled shadows across the ground. The open fields aren't just pretty - they're pieces of living history. During both the Civil War and World War I, soldiers gathered and camped right here before heading off to battle.
One particularly meaningful historical note: the 14th Rhode Island Heavy Artillery (Colored), the first African-American company from Rhode Island to serve in the Civil War, assembled in Providence and made this park their temporary home before deployment.
The tree-lined pathway that wraps around the park makes for an excellent walking loop, whether you're getting your steps in or just enjoying a leisurely wander.
Something for Everyone
Dexter Training Ground is well-used by Providence residents. For the fitness-minded, there's outdoor exercise equipment scattered throughout. If you're looking for something more leisurely, try your hand at the bocce courts or challenge a friend to a match at one of the chess tables.
Kids have plenty of space to burn energy at the expansive playground, which thoughtfully includes a separate fenced area for the under-5 crowd. The equipment caters to various age groups and is kept in good shape year-round.
The park's wide-open spaces invite all kinds of activities - launching a drone, tossing a ball around, or simply stretching out on the grass with a good book. With both sunny spots and shaded retreats, you can find your perfect spot regardless of the weather.
Where Community Happens
Standing watch over all this activity is a bronze statue of Ebenezer Dexter, created by Gorham Manufacturing in 1893 - a quiet reminder of the man whose gift still enriches the city.
Getting to the park is straightforward, with plenty of on-street parking along the three roads that border it. And when you're ready for a bite to eat, the West End's collection of restaurants and cafés are just a short walk away.
Seasonal Gatherings
The park really comes alive with community events during the year. From June through October, Thursday evenings bring a vibrant farmers market to the grounds. Local residents come to browse produce and goods while enjoying the historic space.
