Gano Park is a public recreational area located in the Fox Point neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. Situated along the eastern bank of the Seekonk River, the park spans approximately 11.3 acres and offers a variety of outdoor activities for visitors.
Historical Background
The park's history dates back to the late 19th century when the area was filled in to create new land. It was officially established as a public park in 1949, starting with a children's playground.
In 1958, athletic fields were added, expanding the park to its current size.
Sports and Recreation
Gano Park features several sports facilities, including a soccer field and baseball diamonds. The park is home to the Fox Point/East Side Little League and has hosted numerous recreational softball leagues over the years.
One of its claims to fame is being the former home field for the Local 57 of the International Union of Operating Engineers' Major League Fast Pitch Softball Team, which won several regional titles and national championships until the early 1970s.
