Gano Park
About Gano Park
Riverside Retreat
Found in Providence's Fox Point neighborhood, Gano Park stretches along the Seekonk River's eastern bank, offering 11.3 acres of outdoor goodness. Just a stone's throw from routes 95 and 195, it's a fantastic escape when you need a break from city life without actually leaving the city.
A Bit of History
This little slice of green paradise wasn't always here. Back in the late 19th century, the area was actually filled in to create new land. It officially became a public park in 1949, starting with just a children's playground. Nearly a decade later in 1958, they added athletic fields, expanding it to what we know today.
Get Your Game On
If you're in the mood for some physical activity, Gano Park offers several options. The park features a soccer field and baseball diamonds where many memorable games have been played. The Fox Point/East Side Little League calls this place home, and over the years, countless recreational softball leagues have played here too.
Interestingly, this was once the stomping ground for the Local 57 of the International Union of Operating Engineers' Major League Fast Pitch Softball Team (quite a mouthful, we know!). These folks weren't just playing around - they snagged several regional titles and national championships until the early 1970s.
There's also a basketball court where you can shoot some hoops or challenge friends to a quick game.
Beyond Sports
Not feeling particularly athletic? No worries. The park offers lovely walking paths and open green spaces great for spreading out a blanket for a picnic. The views of the Seekonk River and the old drawbridge are pretty spectacular, especially when the light hits just right.
Boating enthusiasts will appreciate the boat launch that accommodates both hand-carried and trailered boats when you're ready to hit the water.
There's a single picnic table situated next to the basketball courts - great for a lunch break or snack time. And speaking of snacks, food trucks often park here, so you might luck out and grab a bite if you didn't pack your own.
Bring Your Furry Friends
Dog parents, rejoice! Gano Park features a cozy dog park tucked in the corner behind the baseball field where your four-legged buddy can run free off-leash. Throughout the rest of the park, leashed dogs are a common sight, making this a popular spot for morning and evening walks.
Connect and Explore
A paved bike path cuts right through the park, connecting to India Point Park just a 5-10 minute walk away. This makes Gano Park a great jumping-off point if you're looking to extend your outdoor adventure.
Community Hub
Gano Park is a place where neighbors meet, families play, and visitors can experience local life. Its riverside location provides a peaceful atmosphere that contrasts with the busier parts of the city.
On those perfect weather days, you'll come across people reading under trees, enjoying picnics, people-watching, or simply sitting quietly by the water. It's not the biggest park in Providence, but it might just be one of its most cherished.
