About Burnside Park
A Piece of History in Downtown Providence
Tucked into the heart of downtown Providence, Rhode Island, Burnside Park might be small in size, but it's big on character. Right next to Kennedy Plaza, this urban green space is a natural gathering spot where city life converges.
The park bears the name of Ambrose Burnside - yes, the Civil War general whose distinctive facial hair gave us the term "sideburns," and who later became Rhode Island's governor. Originally known as City Hall Park, the land itself has a patchwork origin: part of it was once submerged as part of the Cove Basin, while the remainder was acquired from two railroad companies. The park was dedicated in 1892, and its current name has been in use ever since.
Eye-Catching Landmarks
You can't miss the commanding statue of General Burnside on horseback. The 20-foot bronze equestrian sculpture was created by Irish-American sculptor Launt Thompson, funded through a public campaign that raised $30,000, and unveiled on July 4, 1887. It didn't always stand where it does today though - the statue was originally placed at Exchange Place before being moved to its current position in 1906.

Equally impressive is the Bajnotti Fountain, a water feature with a touching backstory. Sculpted by Enid Yandell and erected in 1902 under its original name, the Carrie Brown Memorial Fountain, it was commissioned by Italian diplomat Paul Bajnotti as a tribute to his late wife, Carrie Mathilde Brown. She was the daughter of Nicholas Brown III - the same person for whom Carrie Tower, another Providence landmark, is named - which gives the fountain an added layer of local history that's easy to overlook at first glance. After recent renovations, it remains the park's centerpiece and provides a soothing backdrop to the surrounding bustle.
Things to Do
Burnside Park has gotten quite a facelift in recent years, making it more inviting and functional. Families with kids will appreciate Brandon's Beach, a playground that brings some much-needed play space to the downtown area.
The park has a bit of something for everyone. You might spot skaters showing off their skills, friends catching up on park benches, or office workers escaping their desks for an al fresco lunch. It's a versatile space that adapts to whatever you need from it - whether that's activity or simply a moment of calm.
Community Hub
Throughout the year, the park hosts community events, performances, and gatherings. Its central location in Providence makes it a common spot for cultural and social activities.

It's also incredibly easy to get to, with Kennedy Plaza acting as the city's main bus station right next door. This accessibility makes Burnside Park a convenient meeting point for both locals and visitors exploring the city.
What to Expect
During your visit, you'll likely share the space with a mix of office workers on their breaks, curious tourists, and locals seeking a green reprieve from the surrounding concrete. The park offers plenty of seating areas fantastic for people-watching, enjoying a quick bite, or simply taking a moment to yourself amid the urban bustle.
Keep an eye out for the park's resident squirrels, who add a touch of wildlife to this urban setting. While Burnside Park has its charms at any time, it really comes alive during daylight hours, making it a worthwhile stop as you explore downtown Providence.
