Gladys Potter Park
About Gladys Potter Park
A Glimpse of History
Located on Elton Street, Gladys Potter Park (also affectionately known as Humboldt Park or Froggy Park) is a charming 1.2-acre haven in Providence, Rhode Island. The park came to life in July 1917 when Mrs. Josephine E. Potter donated this land to the city in memory of her daughter Gladys. Over the years, it's evolved into a treasured space where families create memories among gardens and playgrounds.
Little Ones' Paradise
Often called "the baby park" by locals, this spot is great for the youngest adventurers. Toddlers especially enjoy the thoughtfully designed play areas beneath cool, shady trees. You'll come across two distinct play structures - a gentler one meant for toddlers still mastering their balance, and another challenging enough for the 5-11 crowd. Kids particularly love the pirate ship structure that transforms ordinary afternoons into high-seas adventures.
The playground boasts several swings and a community-minded sandbox where toys are often left behind for the next little explorers to enjoy. Parents can breathe easy thanks to the fully fenced perimeter with multiple gates - allowing for that rare moment to relax while keeping little ones safely contained.
What to Expect
Beyond the playground equipment, the park offers plenty of open space for running wild, practicing on bicycles, or zipping around on scooters. Several picnic tables (3-4) dot the landscape, great for afternoon snacks or celebrating birthdays under the leafy canopy.
The mature trees provide welcome shade during summer months, making this a comfortable retreat even on warmer days. While the park has seen updates in recent years, it maintains a thoughtful balance of options for different age groups.
Finding Your Way
Situated on Elton Street, this green oasis offers a peaceful break from city life despite being right in Providence's heart. The convenient location means you can easily combine park time with a coffee run - several coffee shops and bakeries sit just a stone's throw away, making this community gathering spot even more appealing for a morning or afternoon visit.
