Located in the heart of Charleston, Colonial Lake Park offers a peaceful escape around a tidal pond that locals have treasured for over 150 years. Originally called Rutledge Street Pond, this pleasant spot was renamed Colonial Lake in 1881, referring to the "Colonial Commons" established back in 1768.

A Fresh New Look

In 2016, Colonial Lake got a major facelift through a $5.9 million renovation - a team effort between the Charleston Parks Conservancy and the City of Charleston. The project wasn't just cosmetic; it included practical upgrades like a new water flow control structure to better manage the exchange between the lake and the Ashley River.

The renovation added numerous new plants, trees, and shrubs to the landscape. The flowering plants provide color throughout the seasons, with the gardens changing throughout the year.

If fishing is your thing, you might want to cast a line into this saltwater tidal lake. When conditions are right, you could reel in redfish, flounder, or croakers that make their way through the connecting pipes from the Ashley River.
