About the Location
A Touch of History by the Water
Located in the heart of Charleston, Colonial Lake Park offers a peaceful escape around a tidal pond that locals have treasured for over 150 years. Originally called Rutledge Street Pond, this pleasant spot was renamed Colonial Lake in 1881, referring to the "Colonial Commons" established back in 1768.
What You'll Find There
The park's smooth, wide walkways encircle the lake, creating a fantastic loop for your morning jog, evening stroll, or daily dog walk. If you're looking for a flat, peaceful urban route for exercise, this is your spot.
Need a moment to catch your breath? Benches dot the perimeter, offering quiet places to dive into a good book, watch the world go by, or just enjoy a moment of calm amid the city bustle.
Much of what you see today - the concrete embankments and promenade surrounding the lake - has been in place since 1885, though the park has seen several improvements over the years.
A Fresh New Look
In 2016, Colonial Lake got a major facelift through a $5.9 million renovation - a team effort between the Charleston Parks Conservancy and the City of Charleston. The project wasn't just cosmetic; it included practical upgrades like a new water flow control structure to better manage the exchange between the lake and the Ashley River.
The renovation added numerous new plants, trees, and shrubs to the landscape. The flowering plants provide color throughout the seasons, with the gardens changing throughout the year.
Things to Do
If fishing is your thing, you might want to cast a line into this saltwater tidal lake. When conditions are right, you could reel in redfish, flounder, or croakers that make their way through the connecting pipes from the Ashley River.
Dog owners particularly appreciate the flat, circular path for walks. Just remember to keep your four-legged friends on a leash, and you'll come across convenient pet waste stations throughout the park.
While you won't find picnic tables here, the grassy areas and numerous benches make it easy to enjoy a casual lunch or snack if you're feeling peckish during your visit.
The Surrounding Area
The park is a centerpiece for the Harleston Village neighborhood, which stretches from Broad to Calhoun streets and from Lockwood Drive to King Street. The surrounding historic 18th and 19th-century homes create a picturesque backdrop that enhances the park's charm.
Just across from the lake, you can find more recreational options including tennis courts, pickleball courts, a basketball half-court, and an open field. There's also a playground nearby, making this whole area a versatile spot for active days outdoors.
For those wondering about the lake itself - it's actually a salt water tidal pool fed by an underground ocean tributary. And good news if you're driving: free street parking is usually available around the lake.
Seasonal Magic
During the holidays, Colonial Lake transforms with the Light the Lake celebration, featuring a Christmas tree and candle displays that create a magical atmosphere along the walkways.
Many locals consider sunset the most beautiful time to visit, and each season has its own distinct look. For a quieter experience, morning or evening hours are typically less crowded.
Open 24 hours every day, Colonial Lake Park remains a popular Charleston destination where visitors can enjoy a bit of history and nature in the heart of the city.
