About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Nestled on 13 acres in Charleston, Harmon Field isn't just your average neighborhood park - it's a place where history and community intersect. Established back in 1927 with funding from the Harmon Foundation, this mid-sized green space carries a significant story. Until 1964, it was designated as a segregated facility for African Americans, a reminder of our nation's complex past.
The park's rich history is deeply intertwined with youth sports. In 1953, a pivotal moment occurred when the Cannon Street YMCA created the first black Little League in South Carolina, making Harmon Field their home turf.
Beyond a Playing Field
Perhaps the most compelling chapter in Harmon Field's story came in 1955, when the Cannon Street YMCA All-Stars became state champions by default - white teams chose to forfeit rather than integrate. Though the team received an invitation to the Little League World Series, they weren't permitted to compete, highlighting the struggles of the era.
Today, this historical ground has transformed into a vibrant recreation area serving the Charleston community. The park features several lighted fields where locals gather for various sporting activities throughout the year.
Beyond the Baselines
If you're looking for more recreational options, you'll appreciate that Harmon Field sits right next to the Arthur W. Christopher Community Center and the Herbert Hasell Pool, creating a comprehensive recreational hub.
As you stroll through the park, take a moment to find the state marker on the President Street side. It commemorates Harmon Field's significant role in the civil rights movement and its special place in South Carolina's youth sports history.
