About TS Martin Park in Columbia
T.S. Martin Park is a neighborhood park located on Edison Street in Columbia, South Carolina. The park is named after Thomas S. Martin, a well-known figure in Columbia's African American community and education system who lived from 1911 to 1993. Martin was a teacher at Booker T. Washington High School and was renowned for his innovative teaching methods and dedication to improving the physical education and health of young African Americans in segregated Columbia.
The park was created in 1980 to honor Martin's commitment and service to the black youth of Columbia. In October 2021, the park underwent renovations and improvements as part of the T.S. Martin Neighborhood Park Playground Project. This renovation brought new features and upgraded existing facilities to better serve the community.
T.S. Martin Park offers a variety of recreational opportunities for visitors. The park includes both adult and youth baseball fields, which are equipped with lighting for evening play. Additionally, the recent renovations added new features such as a jungle gym and asphalt basketball courts, providing more options for physical activity and play.
For those seeking a more relaxed experience, the park features walking trails that allow visitors to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise. A covered shade shelter was also added during the renovations, offering a place for visitors to rest and seek refuge from the sun.
While the park provides valuable recreational space for the community, it's worth noting that some visitors have reported issues with maintenance. There have been mentions of broken glass and disrepair in some areas, indicating that ongoing care and upkeep may be needed to ensure the park remains a safe and enjoyable space for all visitors.
