About the Location
Riverside Location
Granby Park is a 24-acre green space located in Columbia, South Carolina, near the historic Granby, Whaley, and Olympia Mill villages. It forms the southernmost segment of the Three Rivers Greenway, which connects the cities of Columbia, West Columbia, and Cayce.
The park features ancient floodplain forest running alongside the Congaree River, offering visitors scenic views of the river and its shoals. A paved, lighted pathway descends from the parking lot to a canoe launch, providing paddlers access to the 47-mile tributary formed by the confluence of the Saluda and Broad rivers.
Trail System
Granby Park's trail system includes a half-mile of paved, lighted paths with wooden bridges and boardwalks. These paths are easily navigable by strollers and wheelchairs, making the park accessible to visitors of all abilities.
Additionally, there is another half-mile of unpaved trails designed for mountain biking and running, catering to more adventurous park-goers. Visitors should note that trail conditions may vary, with some reports of a bridge being out along the main path requiring a detour through a wooded area.
The deeply shaded paths provide welcome relief on hot days, with many tall trees offering natural cooling throughout the walking areas. At times, some trail sections may be temporarily closed for maintenance, so visitors may want to check current conditions before planning a long hike.
Historical Elements
The park preserves elements of local history, including visible stonework from the old Columbia Canal built in the 1820s. Visitors can observe this historic feature along the trail that follows the canal's former towpath.
The park also includes a restroom facility designed to resemble a "saltbox" Mill House circa 1898, adding to its historical charm.
Recreational Features
Granby Park offers a mix of natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The paths feature benches and swings strategically placed along the trail, allowing visitors to sit and enjoy the river views.
The park is popular for fishing, with some visitors reporting success catching catfish from the river. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot turtles sunning on the rocks and various birds in the trees.
Many visitors enjoy bringing their dogs to the park, which is leash-friendly and offers plenty of space for pet walking. The park's location near downtown Columbia makes it a convenient urban oasis for city residents and visitors alike.
Amenities
The park provides clean, well-maintained restrooms near the entrance, along with a water bottle filling station for visitors. Picnic areas are available for those looking to enjoy a meal amidst nature.
While the park offers some river views, it's worth noting that the paths are elevated a few feet above the river banks, limiting direct access to the water in most areas. The peaceful setting makes it an ideal spot for reading, contemplation, or simply enjoying the natural surroundings.
