Granby Park
About Granby Park
A River Runs Through It
Nestled near the historic mill villages of Granby, Whaley, and Olympia, Granby Park spreads across 24 acres of Columbia's natural landscape. This green haven forms the southern tip of the Three Rivers Greenway, connecting Columbia with its sister cities of West Columbia and Cayce.
What makes this park special is its ancient floodplain forest that runs alongside the Congaree River. From the parking lot, a paved, illuminated pathway leads down to a canoe launch - your gateway to a 47-mile aquatic adventure on the tributary formed where the Saluda and Broad rivers meet. The river views and rocky shoals create a tranquil backdrop that feels miles away from city life.
Trails for Everyone
If you're looking for an easy stroll, the park offers a half-mile of paved, lighted paths complete with wooden bridges and boardwalks. These smooth trails welcome everyone - whether you're pushing a stroller or using a wheelchair.
Feeling more adventurous? Another half-mile of unpaved trails awaits mountain biking enthusiasts and runners looking to connect with nature on a more rugged path. Just be aware that trail conditions can change; there have been reports of a bridge being out along the main path, requiring a short detour through the woods.
On those scorching South Carolina summer days, you'll appreciate the deep shade cast by towering trees throughout the walking areas. It's nature's air conditioning at its finest. Occasionally, sections of trails might be closed for maintenance, so it's worth checking current conditions before planning an extensive hike.
A Walk Through Time
As you explore Granby Park, you're literally walking through history. Keep an eye out for the original stonework from the old Columbia Canal built back in the 1820s. The trail follows what was once the canal's towpath - a silent reminder of the area's industrial past.
Even the restroom facility has historical significance, designed to resemble a "saltbox" Mill House circa 1898. It's a thoughtful nod to the area's textile mill heritage that shaped this part of Columbia.
Recreation by the River
Granby Park blends natural beauty with plenty of ways to play. Throughout the trails, you'll come across benches and swings perfectly positioned for river-gazing breaks.
If fishing is your thing, you might join the locals who've had luck catching catfish from the river's edge. Wildlife watchers can spot turtles sunning themselves on rocks and various birds flitting through the tree canopy.
Dog owners, rejoice - this leash-friendly park offers plenty of space for your four-legged friends to explore alongside you. And with its location just a stone's throw from downtown Columbia, it's an accessible escape without having to leave the city.
The Little Things
The park covers the basics well with clean restrooms near the entrance and a convenient water bottle filling station to keep you hydrated. If you're planning to make a day of it, there are picnic areas where you can enjoy a meal surrounded by nature.
While the park does offer river views, it's worth noting that the paths sit a few feet above the riverbanks, so direct water access is limited in most areas. But that slight elevation creates an excellent setting for reading, meditation, or simply sitting back and letting the natural world work its magic on your busy mind.
