About Granby Park in Columbia
Granby Park is a 24-acre green space located in Columbia, South Carolina, near the historic Granby, Whaley, and Olympia Mill villages. It serves as the southernmost segment of the Three Rivers Greenway, which connects the cities of Columbia, West Columbia, and Cayce.
The park features ancient floodplain forest running alongside the Congaree River, offering visitors scenic views of the river and its shoals. A paved, lighted pathway descends from the parking lot to a canoe launch, providing paddlers access to the 47-mile tributary formed by the confluence of the Saluda and Broad rivers.
Granby Park's trail system includes a half-mile of paved, lighted paths with wooden bridges and boardwalks. These paths are easily navigable by strollers and wheelchairs, making the park accessible to visitors of all abilities. Additionally, there is another half-mile of unpaved trails designed for mountain biking and running, catering to more adventurous park-goers.
The park preserves elements of local history, including visible stonework from the old Columbia Canal built in the 1820s. Visitors can observe this historic feature along the trail that follows the canal's former towpath. The park also includes a restroom facility designed to resemble a "saltbox" Mill House circa 1898, adding to its historical charm.
Granby Park offers a mix of natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The deeply shaded paths provide a cool environment for walks, while benches and swings along the trail allow visitors to sit and enjoy the river views. The park's location near downtown Columbia makes it a convenient urban oasis for city residents and visitors alike.
