About Clayton Park
Natural Features
Tucked along Beaver Creek, this park features natural wetlands that offer good opportunities for local plant and wildlife watching. There's a paved 0.2-mile walking loop that circles the entire park - fantastic for a casual stroll or if you're looking to get those steps in. While the trail could definitely use more trees for shade, it's kept in great condition and we've found it totally doable even during light rain showers.
Playground and Recreation
Kids (especially the younger ones) tend to make a beeline for the fun playground at Clayton Park. Parents, don't worry - there's comfortable seating so you can keep an eye on your little ones without having to stand the whole time. Beyond the playground, you'll find plenty of open space where you can toss a baseball around or play an impromptu game of catch.
Just so you know, the playground doesn't have any swings - a feature several families have mentioned they wish was included.
Amenities
One thing that makes this park particularly family-friendly is the clean restrooms with actual flushing toilets (a major plus when you're out with kids!). Throughout the grounds, you'll find several picnic tables and there's even a reservable pavilion if you're planning a larger get-together. You can tell the park staff takes maintenance seriously - the pavilion and surrounding areas are consistently clean and well-kept.
Bringing your four-legged friend? The park is dog-friendly, complete with water fountains designed for both humans and pets. We often see people walking their dogs along the path or letting them enjoy the open areas.
Connectivity
Clayton Park isn't just a standalone destination - it's actually a key connection point in the local greenway network. The park links directly to the Halls Greenway that follows Beaver Creek and continues under Maynardville Pike, eventually connecting you to Halls Community Park.
This integration means you can easily extend your walk or bike ride well beyond the park's boundaries if you're up for a longer adventure.
Accessibility and Location
You'll find plenty of parking here, including handicap spaces for those who need them. The location is practical - it's close to Maynardville Pike for easy access, but set back far enough that kids can play safely away from traffic. Despite being in the heart of the Halls community, the park maintains a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere that many visitors appreciate.
History
Clayton Park was created through a collaborative project involving the Legacy Parks Foundation. After acquiring the property, Legacy Parks donated the land to Knox County, creating a park that's used by residents throughout north Knox County.
