About the Location
A Piece of History in Mechanicsville
Situated in the heart of Mechanicsville neighborhood, Danny Mayfield Park has been breathing life into this corner of Knoxville since 2004. This modest 1.5-acre green space on College Street emerged as part of revitalization efforts, offering a place where neighbors can connect and unwind.
Behind the name lies a touching tribute to Danny Mayfield, a dedicated Knoxville City Councilman who represented the 6th District from 1998 until 2001. A proud Knoxville College graduate, Mayfield left his mark on the community not just through politics but by co-founding the urban ministry Tribe One. After losing his battle with bone cancer in 2001, the community commemorated his legacy through this neighborhood park.
What You'll Find Here
One of the park's unique treasures is its outdoor art gallery showcasing African sculptures that add character and cultural depth to your visit. The design balances recreational spaces with educational opportunities.
You'll spot an outdoor classroom where eager young minds from Maynard Elementary School and Knoxville College often gather for learning beyond traditional walls. Education and recreation share the same space here.
The park's gazebo offers a spot to rest and relax. Several charging stations with outlets are scattered around the grounds. There's a spacious open field meant for impromptu games, however you might want to bring a hat on sunny days since shade is somewhat limited.
Getting Active
The well-lit perimeter path with its smooth sidewalk makes for easy strolls, while also being ideal for kids testing out their skateboarding skills or wobbling along on bicycles with training wheels.
For those looking to squeeze in a workout, the park features outdoor exercise equipment that's kept in good condition. Nothing fancy, but perfectly adequate for a quick fitness session in the fresh air.
Little ones have their own domain in the playground designed for children ages 2-10. The swing set includes a toddler-friendly option and a handicap-accessible swing, ensuring everyone gets to join the fun. While not massive, the play area offers enough entertainment to keep younger kids happily occupied.
Good to Know
The park maintains a clean, welcoming atmosphere during the year. One thing to note: there aren't any public restrooms on the grounds, but you can find facilities at shops and gas stations just a short walk away if nature calls.
Dog parents, rejoice! The park is dog-friendly, so your four-legged family members are welcome to join you for some outdoor time. Just remember to bring those waste bags along.
