About the Location
Park History
Tyson Park spans 27 acres in Knoxville, Tennessee, just a stone's throw from the University of Tennessee campus. It bears the name of Charles McGhee Tyson, a Knoxville native and Naval aviator who lost his life while serving during World War I.
Recreational Facilities
Looking for a place where all kids can play together? Tyson Park houses one of Knoxville's largest accessible playgrounds, creating a space where children of all abilities can join in the fun.
Kids absolutely love the imaginative pirate ship and castle designs that dominate the play area. For those with wheels and a taste for adventure, the park features Knoxville's original skate park, which came to life with support from the Tony Hawk Foundation.
With its plaza area, bank pool, flow pool, and peanut pool, the park accommodates skaters of various skill levels. You'll spot everyone from skateboarders to BMX riders and scooter fans enjoying the space - and thanks to good lighting, the action continues even after sunset.
Sports Amenities
Sports enthusiasts won't be disappointed at Tyson Park. The complex boasts 14 tennis courts and six pickleball courts, named in honor of former Knoxville Mayor Kyle Testerman, who championed their development.
Just be aware that since March 2023, there's a $5 fee to use the tennis facilities. Baseball and softball fans can take advantage of the park's softball field for games and practice.
Need a spot for your next gathering? The park offers three large shelters meant for picnics and get-togethers. These covered pavilions come equipped with grills and picnic tables - ideal settings for birthday celebrations, family reunions, or just a weekend cookout with friends.
Connectivity
One of the coolest things about Tyson Park is how it connects to the broader Knoxville area. The Third Creek Greenway runs right through the heart of the park, linking it to both the Neyland and Bearden Greenways.
This makes it a fantastic jumping-off point if you're up for a longer bike ride - you can pedal west all the way to Cedar Bluff or east to the Forks of the River Greenway, covering about 22 miles in total. The park's walking and biking trails meander alongside Third Creek, offering peaceful views and quiet moments where you might spot turtles sunning themselves or ducks paddling along.
If you're walking the dog, going for a morning jog, or enjoying a leisurely bike ride, these trails provide a welcome escape from the urban hustle.
Amenities
When nature calls, you'll find restroom facilities conveniently located near the playground and tennis courts. Water fountains are scattered across the grounds for when you need to hydrate, and the covered areas include electrical outlets if you need to charge up.
Dog owners will be happy to know that Tyson Park is dog-friendly, however your four-legged friends need to stay leashed at all times. With plenty of parking, beautiful surroundings, and recreation options for virtually everyone, Tyson Park offers a variety of outdoor activities for Knoxville residents of all ages and interests.
