About the Location
A Touch of Memphis History
Positioned in downtown Memphis, Robert R. Church Park spans 7.68 acres of urban greenspace with a story as rich as Tennessee barbecue. The park was established in 1899 by Robert R. Church Sr., who was the South's first African American millionaire.
During the dark days of segregation, this park broke barriers as the first in Memphis to welcome African American citizens.
Monuments That Speak Volumes
At the heart of the park stands a powerful tribute to its founder: a bronze bust of Church Sr. perched atop a granite pedestal. If you look closely at the columns surrounding this monument, you'll notice they trace the footprint of the original Church Park Auditorium - a 2,000-seat venue that once brought the community together in this very spot.
Those walls (if they could talk!) would tell you about visits from luminaries like Booker T. Washington and even President Theodore Roosevelt. Don't miss the compelling statue of Ida B. Wells, the fearless civil rights activist, depicted with hands on hips - a great capture of her uncompromising spirit in the fight for justice.
A Downtown Breather
Amidst the hustle of downtown Memphis, this park offers a welcome respite. Stretch out on the expansive grassy areas and relax in the shadow of the FedEx Forum nearby. The park has seen renovations over the years and remains primarily a quiet, open space with informative signs and preserved structures that highlight its history.
Where Memphis Comes Together
Despite its simple layout, the park hosts various events year-round. From Memphis Pride celebrations to cultural gatherings like the Rwanda Festival, the park continues its long-standing tradition as a meaningful meeting ground for Memphis residents and visitors alike.
In the Heart of it All
You'll discover the park conveniently situated near Beale Street, making it an easy addition to your Memphis cultural tour. While exploring, check out neighboring historical spots including the First Baptist Beale Street Church with its remarkable brickwork crafted by enslaved people, and Omar Handy's house.
Robert R. Church Park represents an important piece of African American history in Memphis. You can sit quietly on a bench reflecting on this history or join in community celebrations held throughout the year.
