The Story Behind the Park

Mary Hazelrigg Park came to life when Mary Lou Hazelrigg, a dedicated Black community leader, convinced the city to transform an empty lot near her home into something beautiful for everyone to enjoy. The park has been serving the community since 1972, spreading across 2.7 acres at the corner of NW 4th Avenue and Jefferson Street in Amarillo, Texas.
