About the Location

Natural Environment

River Legacy Park is a 1,300-acre urban oasis nestled along the Trinity River in north Arlington, Texas. The park features a variety of ecosystems, from bottomland forest to wetlands and open prairie areas. It's a haven for wildlife, where you might find yourself sharing the trail with rabbits, armadillos, and if you're lucky (or early enough), even bobcats and coyotes. Early morning visits tend to offer the best wildlife spotting opportunities.

History

The park came to life through a blend of generous land donations and the existing Rose-Brown-May Park, officially opening its gates to nature lovers in the late 1980s. In 1988, the River Legacy Foundation was established to help preserve the park and enhance its offerings.

Recreational Trails

Nature enthusiasts can explore over 8 miles of paved hiking and biking trails that meander through dense forests and sprawling greenbelts. Thanks to the thick tree canopy covering much of the trail system, you can enjoy comfortable outdoor activity even when the Texas sun is blazing. For those craving more adventure, there are 10 miles of unpaved mountain biking trails maintained by the Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association (DORBA).

The trails stretch from the main entrance off Green Oaks Boulevard all the way to the east entrance near Highway 157/Collins, and extend to the Centreport TRE train station. While trail markers help you navigate this extensive network, be aware that some sections may close temporarily after heavy rainfall or for maintenance work.

Facilities and Amenities

Kids will love the multiple playgrounds scattered across the park, featuring animal and forest-themed equipment with slides, swings, and climbing structures designed for different age groups. The park is fantastic for gatherings with several large pavilions and numerous picnic areas equipped with tables and barbecue grills.

You can find permanent restroom facilities near the main playground area, with portable options strategically placed along the trails. For fitness enthusiasts, the park includes an outdoor fitness equipment area where you can mix strength training with your cardio workout.

Educational Resources

Beyond recreation, River Legacy is a living classroom for the community. The adjacent River Legacy Living Science Center, run by the River Legacy Foundation, offers interactive exhibits, educational programs, and guided nature walks that bring the local ecosystem to life. Their summer camps and year-round educational programs are particularly popular with families looking to combine fun with learning.

Water Activities

The park's position along the Trinity River opens up possibilities for water adventures. Canoeing enthusiasts can access the river via a designated launch point located under the bridge spanning the Trinity. Fishing is also an option in designated areas, but it's worth noting that the current can be quite strong at times.
