About the Location
Natural Environment
River Legacy Park is a 1,300-acre urban oasis located along the Trinity River in north Arlington, Texas. The park features diverse ecological environments, including bottomland forest, wetlands, and prairie areas, providing habitat for numerous species of birds, fish, mammals, and native plants.
History
Developed through a combination of land donations and the existing Rose-Brown-May Park, River Legacy Park officially opened to the public in the late 1980s. In 1988, the River Legacy Foundation was chartered to support the park's preservation efforts and enhance its amenities.
Recreational Trails
The park offers extensive recreational opportunities with over 8 miles of paved hiking and biking trails winding through thick forests and expansive greenbelts. For more adventurous visitors, there are 10 miles of unpaved mountain biking trails maintained by the Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association (DORBA).
Educational Resources
River Legacy Park serves as an important educational resource for the community. The adjacent River Legacy Living Science Center, operated by the River Legacy Foundation, provides interactive exhibits, educational programs, and guided nature walks to help visitors learn about the local ecosystem.
Water Activities
With its location along the Trinity River, the park offers opportunities for water-based activities such as canoeing, with a designated launch point available.
