About the Location
A Hill With History
Perched alongside Lake Austin, Covert Park at Mount Bonnell is one of Austin's natural landmarks. Rising to an impressive 775 feet above sea level, this hilltop hideaway offers one of the best views you'll discover within city limits.
Spread across 5.36 acres, the park has a story to tell. The Covert family donated this land to Travis County back in 1939, before it eventually found its way into the City of Austin's care in 1972. Since the 1850s, locals and visitors alike have been trekking up this hill to soak in those panoramic views of Austin's skyline, Lake Austin, and the rolling Hill Country landscape beyond.

The Climb and the View
Getting to the top requires a bit of effort - you'll need to conquer approximately 102 steps on a limestone stairway. Don't worry though, it's a manageable 5-10 minute climb for most people. If you're looking for a gentler ascent, there's also a less steep path accessible from the entrance's right side.
Once you've made it to the summit, you'll enjoy impressive vistas. The Colorado River winds below, bordered by luxurious riverside homes, while on clear days, Austin's skyline shimmers in the distance. Eagle-eyed visitors can even spot the 360 Bridge from certain vantage points.
The summit area features several small picnic spots connected by short trails, with stone tables and benches where you can catch your breath and take in the scenery. A limestone monument stands on a star-shaped plaza, honoring the Covert family's generous gift of this land.

Nature's Canvas
What makes Mount Bonnell special isn't just the view - it's the natural beauty that surrounds you. Rocky limestone outcrops create a rugged landscape, softened by native plants like mountain laurel, stately live oak, and aromatic Ashe juniper trees.
Since 2006, the park has been part of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, joining over 30,000 acres of protected endangered habitat throughout Travis County.

When to Visit
If you're wondering when to plan your trip, sunset is magical here. The fading light paints the Colorado River and city skyline in warm hues that photographers and romantics alike will appreciate. Early mornings offer a quieter, equally beautiful alternative with fewer fellow visitors.
For a more peaceful experience, try visiting on weekdays when crowds thin out considerably. While beautiful year-round, spring and fall bring milder temperatures that make the climb more comfortable.

Good to Know
Before you head out, note that Mount Bonnell keeps things simple - there are no restrooms or water fountains available. You'll want to bring your own water, especially during those scorching Texas summer days.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM, well-suited for catching both sunrise and sunset if you're ambitious. Free parking is available near the entrance, however spaces fill quickly during popular times.

Staying Safe
It's best not to leave valuables in your car, as break-ins have occasionally been reported in the parking area. Try to park close to the entrance stairs when possible and take important items with you.
Keep in mind that not all trails and viewpoints have protective railings, so you'll want to exercise caution, particularly if you're bringing children or pets along for the adventure. Dogs are welcome but must stay on leash throughout your visit.
