About the Location

Park Overview

Nestled along the north shore of Lady Bird Lake (formerly Town Lake), Holly Shores at Town Lake Metropolitan Park spans a peaceful 17.62 acres in Austin, Texas. As part of the broader Town Lake Metropolitan Park system, this waterfront park offers a great escape from the city's hustle without actually leaving town.

With its calm atmosphere and beautiful lake views, it's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - a true urban sanctuary.

A Park with History

Holly Shores emerged from the Holly Shores/Edward Rendon Sr. Park at Festival Beach Vision Plan, which got the green light from Austin City Council back in August 2014. The plan cleverly incorporated about nine acres from the former Holly Power Plant site, blending it seamlessly with existing parkland along the lakefront.

Getting Active

No matter if you're a dedicated fitness enthusiast or just looking to stretch your legs, Holly Shores has plenty to offer. The park connects to the treasured Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail that loops around Lady Bird Lake - a collaboration between Austin Parks and Recreation Department and The Trail Conservancy has made this section particularly nice.

One advantage of this spot is that the trails tend to be less crowded than other Austin outdoor hotspots, giving you room to breathe while you walk, run, or cycle. No need to dodge crowds while trying to enjoy nature here.

Water Fun

If fishing is your thing, you've found your spot. The park offers good water access, and you might reel in various fish or spot turtles sunning themselves near the shore. The water quality holds up well, enhancing your overall nature experience.

Park Amenities

Scattered within the park, picnic areas invite you to bring lunch or dinner and dine with a view. There's something special about unwrapping a sandwich while watching the sun paint the sky in oranges and pinks over the water.

If you're visiting with kids (or heat-seeking dogs), check out the splash garden pad beyond the community center - it's a hit during those infamous Texas summer months.

Wildlife and Natural Beauty

The park's natural setting hosts a variety of wildlife to observe if you keep your eyes open. Some visitors have even spotted goats working on shoreline maintenance - an eco-friendly landscaping approach that's as effective as it is adorable.

Take some time to simply sit by the water. The quiet moments here, just watching the lake and listening to the gentle sounds of nature, can be surprisingly restorative.

Looking to the Future

Holly Shores is evolving through phased improvements based on the vision plan. These upgrades focus on better accessibility, enhanced facilities, and improved connections to neighboring areas.

Recent work has included new sidewalks, additional picnic areas, and upgrades to existing features - all making this already lovely park even better.

Good to Know

Parking can be limited, so you might want to plan accordingly, especially during peak times or weekends.

Bring your four-legged friend along - the park is dog-friendly with clean trails meant for walking pets. Just remember to bring waste bags and water for your pup.
