About the Location
History and Location
Positioned in East Austin, Texas, Givens District Park spans a generous 40 acres of public green space. The City of Austin acquired this land in 1957, and in 1962, named it after Dr. Everett H. Givens, a dentist, World War I veteran, and respected civic leader who made significant contributions to the community.
The park is home to Tannehill Creek, which meanders north to south throughout the grounds, nourishing numerous large shade trees along its banks. This peaceful waterway is part of the Tannehill Contribution tributary that eventually joins the Colorado River.
Recreation Center
Since 1979, a recreation center has been an important part of this park in East Austin's vibrant and historic community. The center is known for its friendly staff and quality youth programs.
You'll discover programming for everyone from toddlers to adults, plus special holiday events that bring the community together. Their summer camp programs are particularly popular with local families - spots tend to fill up quickly!
Amenities and Facilities
Givens District Park includes both indoor and outdoor spaces for sports, relaxation, and community gatherings.
The basketball courts are often buzzing with energy from pickup games and local competitions. There are also tennis courts available, but you should note they occasionally show signs of wear and tear.
The playground area near the front entrance is generally well-maintained and features equipment for different age groups, including toddlers. The musical toys incorporated into the play space are a nice touch that many kids enjoy.
The park regularly hosts community events, family celebrations, and car shows during the warmer months of spring and summer.
Recent Improvements
The park has seen some welcome updates in recent years, following a vision plan approved in January 2019. These improvements include renovations to both the recreation center and aquatic facility, aimed at better serving the local community.
Perhaps the most significant upgrade has been the swimming pool's restoration project. The new pool facility is appreciated by community members who waited for this investment in their historic East Austin park.
Community Significance
Givens District Park is important to many East Austin residents. It has been used by generations of families over the years.
Many longtime visitors have been coming for decades and now bring their children or grandchildren along. The park has become a familiar gathering place in the neighborhood through the years.
