About the Location

Park Overview

Situated on Austin's east side lies the city's largest green space - Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park. This sprawling 3,695-acre park contains Lake Walter E. Long (or Decker Lake as the locals call it), a 1,165-acre reservoir created back in the '60s to cool a nearby power plant. Heads up on the entrance fees: weekdays will set you back $5, while weekends and holidays jump to $10. Disabled veterans can enjoy the park free of charge.

Recreational Activities

For fishing enthusiasts, this place is a bit of a peaceful escape. The lake offers good fishing opportunities with largemouth bass, catfish, and sunfish. The bass fishing can be particularly rewarding, but keep in mind that water levels sometimes play spoilsport.

Boating is definitely on the menu here, although low water levels occasionally force boat ramp closures. Don't let that stop you though - smaller watercraft like kayaks and canoes can usually still access the water, making this a good spot for kayak fishing.

On those scorching Texas summer days, nothing beats a refreshing dip in the lake. Swimming areas are scattered around the shoreline, offering a fantastic escape from Austin's notorious heat.

Facilities and Amenities

Scattered within the grounds are numerous picnic areas with tables, many with nice lake views. If you're looking for some shade for your gathering, you'll come across several covered pavilions, plus grilling areas for your cookout needs.

Feeling active? The sand volleyball courts might be calling your name. There's also plenty of wide-open grassy space well-suited for frisbee, casual ball games, or just lounging around.

A practical note: the park uses portable toilets rather than permanent facilities, and you'll come across trash and recycling bins conveniently placed across the grounds.

Natural Environment

Beyond the lake, the expansive green spaces are excellent for picnicking, hiking, or simply observing local wildlife. The trails here are nicely maintained and wide enough for comfortable walking or jogging.

Nature lovers will appreciate the diverse ecosystem supporting all sorts of plants and animals. Spring brings a colorful display of wildflowers - bluebonnets, evening primrose, and black-eyed Susans paint the landscape with vibrant hues.

One of the park's greatest assets is its tranquility. Mature trees provide ample shade, creating peaceful retreats from city life. The sunset views over the lake can be particularly beautiful.

Dog-Friendly Areas

Good news for dog parents - your four-legged friends are welcome here, however they'll need to stay leashed. The open fields and trails make for excellent dog-walking terrain, but do keep an eye out near shoreline areas where fishing hooks or line might pose hazards.

Future Development

The park appears to be on the cusp of change. The City of Austin has been crafting a vision plan to enhance what's already here while preserving the natural features that make this place special.

Current Conditions

As of October 2024, the boat ramps at Lake Walter E. Long are closed due to low water levels and planned work on Decker Dam.

You can still launch canoes and kayaks from the shore, and all other park amenities remain open for business. Just a friendly tip - the park tends to get pretty busy on weekends when the weather's nice, so coming early is your best bet if you're hoping for a quieter experience.
